2022 Flat Issue 1 - News Before The Off

Aidan O'Brien's grip on the Qipco 1,000 Guineas tightened on Sunday after long-time ante-post favourite Inspiral was ruled out of the Classic by joint-trainer John Gosden. Inspiral had been supplanted as favourite for the Group 1 on Friday by the O'Brien-trained Tenebrism after Chris Richardson, managing director to Inspiral's owner Cheveley Park Stud, had talked of the spring not being "100 per cent straightforward".

"Having consulted Mrs Thompson and Chris Richardson, a decision has been made not to run Inspiral in the 1,000 Guineas," said Gosden, who trains along with son Thady. "She missed some days training at a critical stage of her preparation and although she is well in herself now, we don't have her at the correct pitch to run in the Guineas."

2022 Flat Profile - One that didn't make it and a surprise to the Ed

Tenebrism 3 y bb f Carravaggio – Immortal Verse

High class 2 year old and 2nd favourite for the 1000 guineas , she made her debut at Naas in March last year , winning a 5 f  by 3 ¾ l from Gaire Os Ard, then in September at Newmarket, won the 6f group 1 Cheveley Park stakes by 1l from Flotus. A mile looks to be the top of her stamina range on breeding, and she may prove best at 6/ 7f . Sure to win some top class races this season.

Trainer A.O Brien

2022 Flat Profile - Yonafis

3 y bc Golden Horn – Modeyra  (Bob)

Could be one of the best unexposed picks, he is currently unbeaten, making a winning debut at Lingfield in November taking a 1m maiden by ½ l from Al Marmar, then followed up at Chelmsford in December winning a  1m novice stakes by 1 ½ l from Mr Big Stuff (received 6lb).

He doesn’t have any fancy entries, but from a stable that is so good at placing it’s horses, I can see him taking a big handicap or two before rising to listed level

Trainer W.Haggas

2022 Flat Profile - Theogony

3 y ch g Teofilio – Sway Me Now  (Cod)

Lightly raced colt, from a good yard and should improve, he made his debut at the Curragh last May, finishing 4th, beaten 11 ½ l by Quick Suzy (received 11lb), in a 6f Auction Maiden. He reappeared at Cork recently in a 7f maiden, finishing 9th, beaten 14l behind Toy (gave 5lb)

Trainer J.Bolger

2022 Flat Profile - Soapy Stevens

4 ybg Harzand – Zubova    (Peej)

Typical of a Mark Johnston horse, he has been pretty busy in his first 2 seasons. He made his debut at Nottingham in October 2020, finishing 3rd in a 1m maiden, beaten 4l by Set point, then 2 weeks later in a 1m 1f Redcar novice stakes, was 3rd again beaten 3 ¼ l by Golden Dove (received 5lb). He finished the season back at Nottingham in a 1 maiden, finishing 8th beaten 14 ¼ l by Simons King.

He reappeared at Doncaster last April, finishing 2nd in a 1m 3f handicap, beaten a head by Valparaiso(received 1 lb), then in May was 4th in a 1m 4f Salisbury handicap, beaten 9 ½ l behind Reverend Hubert ( received 3lb). At the end of the month he got off the mark at Chester, winning a 1m 4f handicap by ¾l  from Snow Ocean  ( gave 25 lb), then followed up at Haydock in a 1m 6f handicap, beating Oceanline 2 ¾ l. He was then 13 th at Royal Ascot  in a 1m 4f handicap, but only beaten 7l behind Sure Fire (gave 1lb), then finished the season at Haydock in a 1m 6f handicap, beaten 10 l in 7th behind Tashkan (received 7lb).

One assumes he picked up an injury, but at the time of writing held a number of entries in staying handicaps, and should prove interesting in those this season.

Trainers Mark and Charlie Johnston

2022 Flat Profile - Sea Grey

3 y gr c Ullysses – Sensory  (Neil)

In the could be anything category, he is bred to seen at best effect at around 1 ¼ m you would think, and he made a winning debut at Lingfield in November taking a 1m 2f maiden by 1 ¾ l from Percy Jones, then in January at Kempton in a 1m 4f novice stakes, was 5 ½ l third to Wild Crusade (received 7 lb). He doesn’t hold any fancy entries, but should certainly win a race or two this season

Trainer A.Balding

2022 Flat Profile - Samburu

3 y bc Kingman – Tempera (Bob)

Unbeaten colt who made his debut at Yarmouth last October, winning a 7f novice stakes by 1 ¾ l from Brilliant Blue, then reappeared this April at Salisbury winning a 7f novice stakes by ¾ l from Taratari (received 7lb). He has no big entries, but will start off on a decent handicap mark, should be at best around a mile, and will surely win more this season

Trainer J.and T Gosden

2022 Flat Profile - Roseberry Topping

3 y bf Mayson – Our Poppet (Martin)

Still a maiden after 3 runs, she is an interesting pick. She made her debut at Ascot last September in a 6f restricted novice stakes, finishing 7th beaten 9 ¼ l by Khanjar, then at Kempton 2 weeks later in a similar event, was 9th beaten 13 ¾ l behind Lil Gruff. She finished the season at Goodwood in October in another 6f restricted novice stakes, finishing 3rd 2 ½ l behind Lil Gruff (gave 7lb).

She reappeared at Wolverhampton recently , winning a 6f fillies handicap by 1 ¼ l from Liv Lucky (received 12 lb),   She is bred to be a sprinter, and starts off a reasonable handicap mark for a top stable, so she win a race or two this season, and could go well in racing league races.

Trainer A.Balding

2022 Flat Profile - Reach For The Moon

3 y bc Sea The Stars – Golden Stream (Steve)

Smart 2 year old, who should progress at 3 and if he lines up in the Derby, will no doubt carry a shed load of money for a Royal winner in this Jubilee year. He made his debut at Yarmouth in May, finishing 2nd to New Science, beaten 1 ½ l, then in June at Royal Ascot in a 7f listed stakes, finished 2nd to Point Lonsdale, beaten ½ l.

He then got off the Mark at Newbury in July, taking a 7f novice stakes from Harrow, then followed up in a 7f group 3 at Sandown in August, beating great Max 4l. He finished the season with a 2nd in a 7f group 2 at Doncaster, beaten a head by Bayside Boy. He holds a Dante and Derby entry, and stepping up in trip is quite an exciting colt.

Trainers John and Thady Gosden

2022 Flat Profile - Paradias

3 y bc Kodiac – Parisa            (Peej)

Interesting pick, he made his debut at Sandown in August in a 7f maiden, finishing 2 ½ l 2nd to King Of Conquest, then in September at Newbury was 4th in a 1m conditions stakes, beaten 9 ¼ l by Zechariah, and on his last start was 3rd in a 1m novice stakes beaten 2l behind Franz. He doesn’t hold any fancy entries, and may be better at 6-7f.

Trainer A. King

2022 Flat Profile - Orzo

3 y bf Aclaim – Chibola    (Martin)

One of the dark horses, she has run once, winning a 7f fillies novice stakes at Kempton last October, beating Shoutout 5l. She has no big race entries, but the style of her win suggests she should be winning again this season

Trainer A. Balding

2022 Flat Profile - New Dimension

3 y bc Ulysses – Azhar  (  Bob, Cliff)

Another of the could be anything brigade, he made a winning debut at Leicester in September, taking a 7f maiden by a head from Carbon.  He reappeared recently at Nottingham, finishing a neck 2nd to  Marsoul (received 7lb), in a 1m novice stakes. Bred to stay 1 -1 1/4 m , and from a trainer who excels with this type, he will hopefully win some decent races this season

Trainer Sir M Stoute.

2022 Flat Profile - Native Trail

3 y bc Oasis Dream – Needleleaf  (Cliff, Martin, Neil, Steve)

Top class 2 year old who made his debut at Sandown in June last year, winning a 7f maiden by 4l from Royal Patronage, then followed up at Newmarket in July, winning a 7f group 2 by a short head from Masekela.

He then went to the Curragh and won the group 1 7f National stakes by 3 ½ l from Point Lonsdale, and finished with victory at Newmarket in October, taking the 7f group 1 Dewhurst stakes by 2l from Dubawi Legend. Unlikely to stay beyond a mile, he is going to be very hard to beat at that distance.

Trainer C.Appleby

2022 Flat Profile - Mobadra

4 y bf Oasis Dream – Longing To Dance (Martin)

Lightly raced 4 year old, she made her debut at Newmarket in October 2020, finishing 9th in a 7f fillies novice stakes, beaten 25 ¾ l by Urban Violet, on heavy ground. She reappeared at Newcastle in December, finishing 2nd in a 7f maiden ,beaten  ½ l by Duty of Care (gave 8lb, then in July last year, got off the mark at Haydock in a 1m fillies novice stakes, beating Evident Beauty (gave 7lb), 1l.

In September at Newmarket, she was 2nd in a 1m fillies handicap, beaten 1l by Madame Tantzy (received 4lb) and was last seen at Kempton in November, winning a 7f handicap by 1 ½ l from Huddleton Mac (received 8lb). One would assume she has been kept in training to try and achieve some black type, and will be interesting to follow.

Trainer R.Varian

2022 Flat Profile - Mehnah

4 y bf Frankel – Asheerah  (Bob)

Very lightly raced but could prove top class this season over 1 ¼ m, she made her debut at Dundalk in September 2020 winning a 7f fillies maiden by 1 ¼ l from Fantasy Lady. She reappeared at Leopradstown in April last year, finishing 2nd in a 7f fillies group 3, beaten a head by Keeper of Time, then in July at Killarney won a 1m fillies and mares listed stakes by ¾ from Emaniya.

She has no big race entries, but should pick up some decent mares group races this season.

Trainer K.Prendegast

2022 Flat Profile - Manobo

4 y bg Sea The Stars – Tasaday (Cliff)

Unraced at 2, he is an exciting young stayer, who should shake up the Cup scene this season. He made his debut at Newbury in May last year winning a 1m 2f maiden by ½ l from Mojo Star, then followed up in up at Kempton , winning a 1m 4f novice stakes by  4 ¼ l from Mr Curiosity (gave 15 lb).

He then went to Saint-Cloud and won a 1m 4f listed stakes by 10 l from Kertez, and at Longchamp in October, won a 1m 7f group 2 by ¾ l from stablemate Kerami. Trainer C.Appleby

2022 Flat Profile - Luxembourg

Aiden O’Brien told the Punter no horse excites him more heading into the new Flat season than the unbeaten Luxembourg, "Luxembourg was always the horse. From the time he went [for his debut] to Killarney, we knew he was very good."

Trainer A.O’Brien

2022 Flat Profile - Inspiral

3 y bf Frankel – Starscope   (Bob, Cliff, Martin , Neil, Peej)

Top class 2 year old, she made her debut at Newmarket in July, winning a 7f fillies maiden by 1 ½ l from Ardbracaan, then followed up at Sandown in a 7f fillies listed stakes, beating Wild Beauty 3 ½ l. She then stepped up to 1m at Doncaster in September, winning a fillies group 2 by 3 ¾ l from Prosperous Voyage, then finished the season with victory at Newmarket in October, taking the group 1 fillies mile by 2 ½ l from Prosperous Voyage.

She sets a high standard and should be in the mix for all the top level fillies races at around a mile this season.

Trainers John and Thady Gosden

2022 Flat Profile - Hoo Ya Mal

3 y bc Territories – Sensationally  (Steve)

An interesting pick who was a useful 2 year old, he made his debut at Sandown in July, finishing 3rd in a 7f novice stakes, beaten 4l by El Bodegon, then in August at York, won a 7f maiden by 2 ½ l from Dawn of Liberation.

In September at Doncaster he was 2nd, beaten a nose in a 7f listed stakes, behind Noble Truth, and reappeared in April this season at Newmarket, finishing 3rd in a 1m group 3, 5l behind Native Trail.

He has English and Irish Guineas entries, a Dante and Derby entry, so is obviously held in high regard from a strong stable. He will be interesting to watch.

Trainer A.Balding

2022 Flat Profile - Eydon

3 y bc Olden Times – Moon Mountain (Steve)

Certainly looks a useful pick, he made his debut at Newcastle in December, finishing 3rd in a 1m novice stakes, beaten ¾ l by Franz Strauss, then in February back over course and distance in another novice stakes was, 2nd beaten a short head by Oceania Legend (gave 7lb).

He got off the mark at Newmarket, winning a 1m 1f listed stakes by 3 ¼ from Masekela. That was impressive and he should win more this season, and has a guineas, Dante and Derby entry.

Trainer R,Varian

2022 Flat Profile - Everyonelovesagrey

3 y gr g Hellvelyn – Action Platinum (Neil)

Probably not quite true in punter circles now as a number of them are decent, in Neil’s string and win quite a bit. This one is not currently in that category and is a very sporting inclusion as the name bearer for the Minety based string.

He made his debut at Ascot last September, finishing last of 7, beaten 19 behind Wanees in a 2 y 7f novice stakes, then at Newbury in September in a 6f maiden, was 10th 0f 11, beaten 21 ½ l behind Deodar. 2 weeks later at Lingfield he was 11th of 13 in a 6 7f novice stakes, beaten 12 ½ l by Youthful King, then in November in a 1m nursery handicap , was 9th of 12, beaten 6 ½ l by Vaxholm (received 1lb).

He finished the season at Wolverhampton finishing 8th of 11, beaten 4 ½ l by Jungle Run (gave 9lb). I will be watching a lot on Sky at Lingfield, Southwell and Wolverhampton, and he has shown enough in a couple of those runs to suggest he will pop at a big price in a little handicap.

Trainer A. West

2022 Flat Profile - Discoveries

3 y bf Mastercraftsman – Alpha Lupi (Cliff)

High class 2 year old, she made her debut at Leopardstown in June, finishing 4th in a 7f fillies maiden, beaten 3 ¾ l behind Juncture, then 3 weeks later won a similar event at the Curragh, beating Tuesday a short head. Stepped up in class, she finished 3rd in a 7f group 2 at the Curragh in July, beaten 4 11/2 l behind Agartha, then in September reversed the form when winning the 7gf group 1 Moyglare Stud stakes at the Curragh beating Agartha 3 /4 l.

She should make her mark in the top fillies events over 1 – 1¼ miles.

Trainer Mrs J Harrington

2022 Flat Profile - Dillydingdillydong

4 ybg Territories- Cephalonie (Peej)

Who ever named him deserves shooting and it’s probably best we don’t how he came by his name !. He has yet to get off the mark in 6 attempts, so is an interesting pick to say the least. He made his debut at Salisbury in July 2020, in 7f 2 year old novice stakes, finishing 3rd 1 1/2l behind Francesco Guardi, then 2 weeks later at Windsor in a 6f novice stakes, was beaten 4 ½ l behind Hot Scoop, finishing 5th. He then finished the season at Lingfield in October in a 7f nursery handicap, finishing 7th, beaten 5 ½ by Sir Maxi (received 1 lb).

He had his Dillydong removed in December and returned in April last year in a 7 f handicap at Beverley, finishing 8th, beaten 12 ¾ l by Blu Boy (received 5lb), then in June in a 6f handicap was 12th and last beaten 22l by Lockdown. He reappeared this year at Wolverhampton in March finishing 8th, beaten 4 ½ l by Chookie Dunedin (gave 3lb), and looks to be in the grip of the handicapper

Trainer R.Hannon

2022 Flat Profile - Codswallop

3 y gr g Outstrip – Lady Benedicte  (Cod)

Can’t be a much better named horse for the Cod squad, and who would have thought Adam West would have 3 of his string in the Punter strings! He made his debut at Kempton last August, finishing 7th, beaten 14 l by Tollard Royal (gave 7lb,  in a 1m restricted novice stakes, then in September at Newbury in a 7f novice stakes, was 5th, beaten 12 ½ l behind Dubai Poet (gave 5lb).

He then reappeared at Southwell in April this year, finishing 8th, beaten 10 ¾ l by War Of Words in a 1m maiden, and recently finished last of 10 at Yarmouth in a 1m 2f handicap beaten 16 ¾ l by Jalea Moon ( gave 5lb.

Trainer A .West

2022 Flat Profile - Captain Haddock

5 y bg Make Believe – Kayd Kodaun  (Cod)

Unraced at 2 , he was initially trained by Harry Dunlop, and he made his debut at Kempton in July 2020, finishing 4th, beaten 8 ¼ l behind Almighwar (gave 7lb),in a 1m 4f novice stakes,  then at Kempton a month later, was 3rd , beaten 8l by Ocean Wind in a 1m 3f maiden. In October at Haydock he was 6th beaten 22 ¾ l by Trumpet Man in a 2m handicap, then was 5th, beaten 14 l by Law of One at Wolverhampton in a 1m 4f novice stakes. In April last year he changed trainers and moved to Heather Main, and reappeared last April in a 1m 2f handicap at Newcastle finishing 2nd,    beaten 1 ¾ l by  Hotspur Harry (gave 1lb).

He was then 12th at Newbury in a 1 m 4f handicap, 8th at Linfield in a 1m 2f handicap, then got off the mark at Hamilton, winning a 1 m 5f handicap by 5l from Mutamaded. In August he was 3rd at Ffos Las in a 1m 6f handicap, beaten 2 ¼ l by Roar (received 6lb), then at Sandown was 7th, beaten 5 ¼ l by Oceanline (received 1 lb), in a 1m 6f handicap. He won again at Epsom in a 1m 4f handicap , beating Cemhaan (received 3lb), by 4l, then was 4th at Catterick in a 1m 6f handicap, beaten 4 ¼ l by Steel an Icon (received 2lb.

In November at Wolverhampton he was 5th in a 1m 6f handicap , 4 ½ l behind Moliwood  (gave 3lb), then was 4th at Kempton in a 2m handicap and 3rd at Southwell in a 1m 4f handicap. After a 3 month break he reappeared this March at Doncaster, finishing 3rd in a 1m 4f handicap, beaten 5 ¾ l by Ghadbaan. He is probably too consistent for his own good, and looks in the handicappers grip.

Trainer H. Main

2022 Flat Profile - Berkshire Shadow

3 y gr c Dark Angel – Angel Vision ( Neil)

High class 2 year old he made his debut at Newbury in April last year, winning a 5 f maiden by ½ l from Amazonian Dream, then followed up at Royal Ascot in June winning the 6f Group 2 Coventry stakes by 1 ¼ l from Eldrickjones.

In July ay Goodwood he finished 2nd in the 7f group 2 Vintage stakes, beaten ¾ l by Angel Bleu, then was disappointing at York in August over 6f in the  group 2 Gimcrack stakes, finishing 7th, though only beaten 4l, and finished the season with a solid 4th at Newmarket in October , in the 7f group 1 Dewhurst stakes, beaten 4 ¼ l behind Native Trail.

He holds English and Irish guineas entries, and a mile will be the furthest he goes you would think. He certainly should win some decent races this season

2022 Flat Profile - Baaeed

4y bc Sea The Stars – Aghareed   ( Bob, Cliff, Martin, Neil)

Unraced at 2 he exploded on to the scene last season, finishing as the top rated miler. He made his debut in June last year, winning a 1m maiden at Leicester by 1 ¼ l from Tammaamm, then followed up at Newmarket 12 days later, taking a 1m novice stakes by an eye catching 7 ½ l from Komachi.

At Newmarket in July he won a 1m listed stakes by 4l from Maximal, then 3 weeks later at Goodwood , took a 1m group 3 by another eye catching 6 ½ l from El Drama. In September he went to Longchamp and won the 1m group 1 Prix Du Moulin by 1 ¼ l from Order of Australia, and finished the season with victory at Ascot on Champions day, winning the 1m group 1 Queen Elizabeth 11 stakes by a head from Palace Pier.

He is likely to start off in the Lockinge stakes, and sets a very high standard for the 1m division.

3 y bc Dubawi – Albasharah  (Peej)

Twice raced colt who made his debut at Kempton on 26 March this year, taking a 1m 2f 3 year old novice stakes by 6 ½ l from Wholeofthemoon. He reappeared at Newmarket  recently, finishing 2nd to stable mate New London, beaten 2 ¼ l in a 1m 2f 3 y novice stakes,  holds a Dante entry, and should certainly win some decent races this season

2022 Flat Profile - Aeonian

3 ybc Ulysses- Ama   (Cliff, Steve)

One who is in the could be anything camp, but with a trainer who will get the best out of this well bred colt. He made a winning debut at Leicester, when winning a 7f maiden by a head from Altraif having been slowly away and starting at 25/1. That suggests he was a bit of a surprise winner. He should certainly stay 1 m ¼ and whilst he has no fancy entries, he will hopefully win some decent races this season.

2022 Flat - What's in a name?

Aldous Huxley, (26 July 1894 – 22 November 1963) was an English writer and philosopher

Piz Badile is a fantastic granite peak that stands out notably from its surroundings in the Bergell (Bregaglia). The north side of the mountain is in Switzerland and the south side is in Italy.

Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea off the western coast of Italy. It is named for the Tyrrhenian people identified with the Etruscans of Italy.

Theogony (from the Greek theogonia, meaning "generations of the gods") is an epic poem of 1,022 hexameter lines which describes the birth of the gods in the Greek pantheon

Orzo is a small pasta shape that looks like a grain of rice and has a velvety texture similar to risotto

King Zain-ul-Abidin was the eighth King (Sultan) of Kashmir, belonging to the Shah Mir Dynasty which ruled Kashmir from 1339 to 1561 and can be attributed at establishing Islam in the valley.

The Samburu National Reserve is a game reserve on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro river in Kenya.

2022 Flat - Editor's Introduction

So we have an interesting situation on the 3 year old front as Godolphin and Coolmore have 2 top class colts , and guessing which one proves best could be pivotal in deciding things. Godolphin have Native Trail and Corebus, Coolmore Point Lonsdale and Luxembourg.

The stayers division is up for grabs now, on decent ground Stradivarius will make them all go again, if it is a wet summer Trueshan comes in to play, and Godolphin’s Manobo comes in to the picture.

The Sprint division looks wide open, and I don’t see a standout like Battaash at the moment, so we could see the top races being won in turn by the likes of Winter Power, A Case For You, Man of Promise, Emaraty Ana. Improvers such as Great Endeavour, Lazuli, amongst others come in to play, and Oxted who I just can’t side with.

On the new sires front it is interesting to see how many Ullysses has in this edition already.
With only 7 of us now 108 different horses suggest a wide open season and 27 are  covered here,

Good luck to all

The Editor

2021/22 Boozypunter Horse of the Season

Is...

Allaho

After a great winter campaign in 2020/21, capped off with an easy win in the Ryanair at Cheltenham, it was a surprise that Allaho was a single pick for Peej. Perhaps a Punchestown defeat (over an insufficient? two miles) to Chacun Pour Soi after the Punter season had finished put off some potential pickers.

Willie Mullins made the John Durkan Chase at Punchestown in December the scene for Allaho's reappearance. Mr P W Mullins took the ride and it wasn't a perfect display but Allaho did come home a two-length winner at 7/2 and 56.6 points.

Paul Townend was in the Saddle in January this year for an easier win at Thurles in a Grade Two chase. The 4/11f had twelve lengths to spare over the talented Fakir D'Oudairies at the end to bank another 42.2 points.

Allaho was odds on for a Ryanair repeat at Cheltenham in March and despite a slight mistake at the last the win never looked in doubt and a winning distance of 14 lengths to deliver Peej another 78.16 points. Towned was delighted with the horse:  “He is a beast,” he said. “I was going the gallop he wanted to go. I don’t interfere with him. Once he was jumping and galloping at that speed, it was going to take a fair one to come by him."

Our top three were:

176.96 - Allaho (56.6 + 42.2 + 78.16)
169.59 - Epatante (50.09 + 51.8 + 14.7 + 53)
160.8 - Coole Cody (72.8 + 88)
