2021 Flat - News before the off

Richard Hannon has expressed concerns that the undulations of the Rowley Mile could prove a stumbling block for his Newbury trial winner Chindit in Saturday's Qipco 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Hannon told The Punter, "When Chindit was beaten in the Dewhurst, the times that day suggested it was heavy ground. I am concerned about the track, however, as he's done all his winning on flat tracks such as Newbury, Ascot and Doncaster and this is vastly different to that.

"I don't think he enjoys the undulations that much, but I put his defeat that day down to the ground and I just hope Newmarket misses the heavy showers that are around before the weekend."

Wembley became the new favourite on Tuesday for Saturday's Qipco 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket as bookmakers trimmed the Aidan O'Brien-trained runner into a top-priced 9-2.

Dewhurst winner St Mark's Basilica, a 6-1 shot, also represents Aidan O'Brien, as does Battleground, successful at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood last summer and 10-1 with Hills for the Guineas.

William Buick will partner Craven Stakes winner Master Of The Seas over ante-post gamble and joint-favourite One Ruler in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas on Saturday. Charlie Appleby, who trains the Godolphin duo, said Buick had come to the decision having "asked some serious questions" of Master Of The Seas, who picked up stylishly to defeat stablemate La Barrosa in the Craven having been short of room at a key stage of the race.

One Ruler was last seen chasing home Mac Swiney in the Vertem Futurity at Doncaster last October, but had plunged into joint-favouritism for the first Classic of the season following glowing reports of his home work. He will be ridden by James Doyle.

Mutasaabeq was clipped to 7-1 (from 8) behind 9-2 favourite Thunder Moon by Coral, whose head of PR David Stevens said: "It's far from impossible that the supplemented Mutasaabeq could challenge Thunder Moon for favouritism, such is the open nature of this season's opening Classic."

Oisin Murphy says he was “thrilled” with Alcohol Free’s preparation run ahead of Sunday’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas bid and believes she has every chance of staying the mile at Newmarket.

2021 Flat profiles - Two that didn't make it

Sacred  3 y bf Exceed and Excel – Sacre Caroline

Filly who had an ok 2 year old season, but impressed on recent reappearance at Newmarket, that moved her in  to 3 y bc Sea The Moon - the 1000 guineas reckoning. She started at Newmarket last June winning a 5f maiden by 1 ¾ l from Sardinia Sunset, then was 2nd at Ascot in a 5f group 2, beaten ¾ l by Campanelle, then was 2nd again at York in August in a 6f group 2, beaten 1l by Miss Amulet. She was 2nd again next time at Doncaster in September in another 5f group2, finishing a short head behind Ubetteabelive it, then disappointed at Newmarket in September, finishing 8th in the Group 1 Cheveley Park stakes, beaten 12 ½ l behind Alcohol Free. On breeding a 7f/ 1m are her optimum trip and she impressed at Newmarket recently, winning a 7f group 3 by ¾ l from Saffron Beach and is now a 10/1 shot for the 1000 guineas, which is not a bad e/w shout. Willie Haggas told the Punter, "Her work has been good this spring and she's gone clear of anything she's worked with. It's a great start to the season as she's finally won a Group race and now we'll try to get a bigger one

Trainer W.Haggas

Shale 3y b f Galileo – Homecoming Queen

Very decent 2 year old who made her debut at Leopardstown in June, in a 7f fillies maiden, finishing 6th beaten 4 ¼ l behind Oodnadatta, then in July won a 1m fillies maiden at Gowran Park by 3 ¼ l from High Heels. She followed up in August at Leopardstown, taking a 7f group 3 by 1 ½ l from Pretty Gorgeous, then 3 weeks later at the Curragh, was beaten 2 ½ l by Pretty Gorgeous in a 7f Group 2. In September in the7f group 1 Moyglare stud stakes, she reversed form again with Pretty Gorgeous, beating her ¾ l , then finished the season with a disappointing 6th at Newmarket in the 1m group 1` Fillies Mile, beaten 7 ¾ l behind Pretty Gorgeous. She reappeared at Leopardstown on 11 April and finished 5th in a 7f group 3 beaten 2 ¾ l by Keeper of Time (received 3lb), and should win some decent races this season

Trainer Donnacha O’brien

2021 Flat profile - Wembley

3 y bc Gailileo – Inca Princess (Peej, Steve, Neil, Tony)

Another smart 2 year old from Coolmore, he made his debut at the Curragh at the end of June, finishing 3rd in a 7f maiden, beaten 1 ½ l behind Hudson River, then in July in a similar event over course and distance, was 2nd beaten 1 ½ l by Mac Swiney. He was 2nd again in a 7f maiden at Galway beaten ¾ l by Blue For You, and got off the mark at Roscommon next time winning a 7f maiden by 1l from Sword Zorro. He stepped up in class next time, finishing 2nd in the group 1 National stakes, 1 ½ l behind Thunder Moon, then finished the season at Newmarket with a ¾ l 2nd to St Marks Basilica in the 7f group 1 Dewhurst stakes.  He has entries in the English and Irish 2000  guineas, and the English and Irish Derby’s , and being a Galileo, should improve for a step up in trip. 16/1 e/w looks a solid bet in the Derby

Trainer A O’Brien

2021 Flat profile - Troll Peninsular

4 y bg Karakontie – Perfect Step (Cliff)

A late developer and the first horse the Niarchos  family have had with Roger Varian, he was unraced at 2 and was gelded before his debut at Newcastle last October where he was a 1 ¾ l 2nd to Future King in a 7f maiden. He won next time out at Redcar, winning a 7f maiden by a short head from Aroha, and reappeared at Kempton at the end of March, winning a 1m novice stakes by 3 ¼ l from Mount Marcy in impressive style. He could be any thing, but will hopefully step up to be a listed class performer at least by the end of the season

Trainer R.Varian

2021 Flat profile - Thunder Moon

3 y bc Zoffany – Small Sacrifice  (Bob, Cliff

High class  2 year old and open to loads of improvement, he made his dat the Curragh on 9 August in a 7f maiden, winning by 3 ¾ l from Colour Sergeant, then followed up in September over course and distance, taking the Group 1 National stakes by 1 ½ l from Wembley, and finished off with a 2 ½ l third at Newmarket in October, behind St Marks Basilica and Wembley. He should make his mark at the highest level this season

Trainer J P O’Brien

2021 Flat profile - The Revenant

6 y ch g Dubawi – Hazel Lavery (Cliff)

Developed in to a top class miler, he has won 10 of his 14 starts and never finished out the frame. He won a number of conditions stakes at 3, but gained his first listed win at 4 when taking a 1m event at Saint-Cloud in March 2019, by 2 ½ l from Qualisaga, then 2 weeks later got his first group level success, winning a 1m group 3 at Saint- Cloud by a head from Graphite. In May he took a 1m group 2 at Baden-Baden by ½ l from Imaging, then after a long break, returned in October to win a 1m group 2 at Longchamp by 4 ½ l from Olmedo.2 weeks he later he came to Ascot and finished 2nd in the 1m group 1 Queen Elizabeth 11 stakes, beaten 1 ¼ l by King Of Change. Last season he won a 1m group 2 at Longchamp beating Ziegfield (received 3lb) 1 ¼ l then won the 1m group 1 Queen Elizabeth II stakes at Ascot by a head from Roseman. He reappeared at Saint – Cloud recently finishing 3rd in a 1m group 3 beaten 1 l behind Wally. He has a group 1 entry at Newbury in the Lockinge stakes, and should pick up some decent group races again

Trainer F H Graffard

2021 Flat profile - Teona

3 y bf Sea The Stars – Ambivalent (Steve)

Useful 2 year old filly who made her debut at Newcastle in October, finishing 2nd in a 1m fillies maiden, beaten 1l by Sea Empress, then in November won a 1m 2f maiden at the same track by an impressive 9l from Kondo Isami. She is 12/1 for the 1000 guineas , which may prove on the sharp side for her, but she also has English and Irish Oaks entries, and she could prove to be very good by the end of the season.

Trainer R.Varian

2021 Flat profile - St Marks Basilica

3 y bc Siyouni - Cabaret (Tony

Very Smart 2 year old who made his debut at The Curragh in July, finishing 2nd in a 6f maiden, beaten 2 ¼ l by Coill Avon, then stepped up to Group 1 level was 5th over course and distance in the Phoenix Stakes, beaten 4 ½ l behind Lucky Vega. He got off the mark next time in a 6f maiden at the Curragh at the end of August, beating Loch Lein 1 ¼ l, then was third over 7f in the Group 1 National stakes, beaten 1 ½ l by Thunder Moon, and finished the season with victory at Newmarket, taking the 7f Group 1 Dewhurst stakes by 3 /4 l from Wembley. He will win at the top level this season

Trainer A P O’brien

2021 Flat profile - Snow Lantern

3 y gr f Frankel – Sky Lantern( Cliff, Neil, Steve

Very smart looking filly who made her debut at Ascot last July, finishing 2nd in a 7f maiden, beaten 1 1 ¼ l by Zabeel Queen. She made an eye catching reappearance at Newbury recently, taking a 1m maiden by 1 ¾ l from Derab, and is now only an 8/1 shot for the 1000 guineas, and there are a lot worse shouts. She should prove top class by the end of the season.

Trainer R.Hannon

2021 Flat profile - Serenas Queen

3 y gr f Iffraaj – Serena’s Storm (Martin)

Useful filly who made her debut at Lingfield in December finishing 4th in a 1m maiden, beaten 5 ¼ l behind Ocean Road, then 2 weeks later at Chelmsford won a 1m novice stakes by ½ l from Melody of Life (gave 5lb). She reappeared at Salisbury recently, winning a 7f novice stakes by a neck from Sunset Memory (received 7lb), and with a trainer who excels with fillies, she should be winning again.

Trainer R.Beckett

2021 Flat profile - Santa Barbara

3 y bf Camelot – Santas Dream  (Bob, Cod,Neil Tony)

Once raced filly who won her maiden at the Curragh in September over a mile, beating Kailash 2 ½ l. She is just 5/2 for the 1000 guineas, and also has an entry in the Irish 1000 and the Epsom Oaks. The form of her maiden is nothing special, Kailash was only 3rd in another maiden in March, so it is obviously her home reputation doing the talking. She will be interesting to watch this season.

Trainer A O ‘Brien

2021 Flat Profile - Queens Speech

3 y ch f American Pharaoh – Paradise Playgirl (Bob

One of the dark horses this once raced filly made her debut at the Curragh in November last year, winning a 7f  fillies maiden by 5l from Disco Boots. She has a host of group race entries, including the English and Irish 1000 guineas and the Oaks, so she is presumably seen as a group class filly, and from a stable that knows how to bring it’s fillies through, her progress will be interesting

Trainer A P O’Brien

2021 Flat Profile - Pretty Tiger

3 y b c Sea The Moon – Fast And Pretty (Cod)

Useful looking French colt who made his debut at Deauville in November finishing 4th in a 1m 1f maiden for unraced colts and geldings, beaten 2 ¼ l behind Riche Roo. He reappeared at Cagnes – Sur – Mer in January and won a 1m 2f maiden by 4 ½ l from Lavandier, then followed up at Saint – Cloud in March taking a 1m 2f listed stakes by 4l from Cash Equity. On latest start at Longchamp recently, he won a 1m 2f group 3 by a nose from Cheshire Academy, and could be a lively player in the top French races this season.

Trainer  F.Vermulen

2021 Flat profile - Pretty Gorgeous

3 y bf Lawman –Lady Gorgeous  (Cliff)

High class 2 year old, who should make her mark at the highest level this season. She made her debut at Bellewston in July, winning a 1m fillies maiden by 5l from Talacre, then stepped up group 3 level in August finished 1 ½ l 2nd to Shale at Leopardstown over 7f. She reversed the form at the Curagh in a 7f group 2 3 weeks later, beating Shale 2 ½ l, then in September was beaten by Shale in the 7f Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes over 7f at the Curragh, finishing ¾ l 2nd. She finished the season with victory at Newmarket in the 1m group 1 fillies mile beating Indigo Girl ½ l with Shale back in 6th. She should win some top class races at around a mile this season this season.

Trainer J P O’Brien

2021 Flat profile - One Ruler

3 y bc Dubawi – Fintry  (Cliff, Cod)

High Class 2 year old and has been 2000 guineas favourite through the winter, he made his debut at Sandown last July, finishing 2nd in a 7f maiden, beaten 3 ¼ l by Etonian. He then won a maiden over the same course and distance in August beating Maximal 1 ½ l, then at Doncaster was a shade disappointing when 3rd in a 7f listed stakes, finishing 2 ¾ l behind New Mandate. In October he took a 1m group 3 by 1 ¾ l from Van Gogh and finished with 2nd at Doncaster on heavy ground in the 1m group 1 Futurity stakes, beaten ¾ l by Mac Swiney.

He should certainly win some decent races this season

Trainer C.Appleby

2021 Flat profile - Notre Belle Bete

gr c Zoffany – Angelic Guest  (Neil)

One of Neils grey brigade and a new trainer to the ranks, unraced at 2, he made his debut at Leopardstown recently in a 7f listed race, which suggest he is thought pretty useful, and he ran well to finish 4th, beaten 2 ½ l behind Poetic Flare. A normal improvement should see him in the winners enclosure, and he could prove to be a shrewd pick

Trainer D Bunyan

2021 Flat profile - Logician

5 y gr h Frankel – Scuffle (Bob, Neil)

High class though rather fragile performer, un raced at 2,  he made his debut at Newbury in May 2019, winning a 1m 2f maiden by 2l from High Commissioner, then followed up at Newmarket in June, taking a 1m 2f novice stakes from Away He Goes. He then took a 1m 4f handicap at Newbury in July by 4 ½ l from Natty Night ( received 15 lb), then stepped up in class won a group 2 over 1m 4f at Doncaster in August, beating Constantinople 1 ¾ l before finishing the season unbeaten by winning the 1m 6f group 1 St leger at Doncaster by 2 ¼ l from Sir Ron Priestley. Last season after a set back  he reappeared at Doncaster in September in a 1m 2f conditions stakes at Doncaster, beating Mythical Magic 7l, and then disappointed on soft  ground at York  in October finishing last of 4 in a 1m 4f group 3 beaten 9 ¾ l by Euchen Glen.

He has group 2 entry at 1m 4f, and 1n 6f and a group 1 entry in the 1m 4f Coronation Cup. He should certainly win some decent races this season if back to his best.

Trainers John and Thady Gosden

2021 Flat profile - Lafan

3 y bc  Dandy Man – Light Glass  ( Martin)

Interesting pick, unraced at 2 he made his debut at Doncaster in March, finishing 4th in a 7f novice stakes, beaten4 ¼ l behind George Peabody, then in April at Lingfield, filled the same position in another 7f novice stakes, beaten 1 ¾ l behind Adelita, then on his last start at Salisbury in another 7f novice stakes was third behind behind Great News, beaten 1 ½ l.  His progress will be interesting

Trainer R.Hannon

2021 Flat profile - Indigo Girl

3 y bf Dubawi – Montare (Bob, Martin, Peej, Steve, Tony

High class 2 year old, she made her debut at Yarmouth at the end of August, winning a 1m maiden by 3l, then followed up at Doncaster in September taking a 1m fillies group 2 by ¾ l from Dubai Fountain. She finished the season with a ½ l second to Pretty Gorgeous at Newmarket in the group 1 fillies mile, and should make her mark in the top fillies races this season. She has entries in the 1000 guineas (10/1 looks generous e/w ), and the English and Irish Oaks.

Trainers John and Thady Gosden

2021 Flat profile - Geodesic

2y gr c Carravaggio – Eccentricity  (Neil)

The darkest of the strings I would say, he has raced once, finishing 5th recently in a 6f maiden at the Curragh , beaten 4 ¾ l behind Glounthaune. He is pretty well bred, should improve to win at least a maiden, and is one to watch with interest.

Trainer Donnacca O’Brien

2021 Flat profile - Duel In The Sun

4 y ch g Sea The Stars – Queens Conquer (Peej)

Cleverley named gelding, very lightly raced, but looks an interesting one for the season, he made his debut at Newmarket in June last year. Finishing 2nd in a 1m  novice stakes, beaten 3 3 ¾ l behind Sunray Major, then won a similar event at Newcastle in December, beating Night Ranger a head. One assumes 1m –
1¼m handicaps and possibly listed events will be his targets.

Trainer C. Fellowes

2021 Flat profile - Diligent Harry

3 y bc  Due Diligence – Harryana To (Peej)

Unraced at 2, he made his debut at Wolverhampton in January, winning a 6f maiden by 2 ¼ l from Batraan, then in February, took a 5f novice stakes at Kempton by 4 ½ l from Miss Bella Brand. In March he finished a head 2nd at Lingfield in a 6f handicap behind Rohaan ( gave 1 lb), then on Finals day Lingfield, took a 6f conditions stakes by 2l from Mighty Ghurka. From a stable that does well with sprinters, he is obviously on the upgrade, and should win more races at a modest level

Trainer C.Cox

2021 Flat profile - Chindit

3 y bc Wootton Bassett – Always A Dream (Peej, Steve)

High class 2 year old who made his debut at Doncaster in July, winning a 7f maiden by 1 ¾ l from Alablaq, then followed up at Ascot in July, taking a 7f listed stakes by 1 ¾ l from Cobh. He then won a 7f group 2 at Doncaster in September, beating Albasheer 1l, and finished the season with a disappointing 9th at Newmarket in the 7f group 1 Dewhurst stakes, beaten 8l behind St Marks Basilica.  He made a pleasing reappearance at  Newbury recently, winning a 7f group 3 by a neck from Mehmento, and now heads to the 2000 guineas, where he is now a 11/1 shot. He should certainly win more races, even if that proves beyond him.

Trainer R.Hannon

2021 Flat profile - Chez Pierre

3 y ch c Mehmas – Hortensia  (Cliff)

Unbeaten at 2, he made his debut at Chantilly in September winning a 6f maiden by ¾ l from Favaritx, then in October over course and distance won a conditions stakes by 3l from Izumi. He has an entry in the 2000 guineas, and his best trip will be interesting as he looks more of a sprinter on paper, but the editor hopes he will win some decent races at between 6f and a mile

Trainer F.H Graffard

2021 Flat profile - Cheshire Academy

3 y b c Flintshire – Danza Cavallo ( Cod)

Smart looking French, trained colt, he made his debut at Pau in November, winning a 1m 2 f maiden by a head from Gregolimo, then in February this year won a 1m 2f conditions stakes at Pau by 1 ¼ l from Gregolimo. His last start was at Longchamp recently, where he was 2nd in a 1m 2f group 3, beaten a nose by Pretty Tiger, and he could be useful in the French 1m 2f races this season.

Trainer J.C Rouget

2021 Flat profile - Berkshire Shadow

2 y gr c Dark Angel  - Angel Vision (Neil, Steve

This colt made his debut at Newbury recently, winning a 5f maiden by ½ l from Amazonian  Dream. He is bred to be fast, and is obviously well forward, and nicely bred, so could turn out to be pretty smart. He has a super sprint entry, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him at Royal Ascot

Trainer A.Balding

2021 Flat profile - Baton Rouge

3y bc Galileo – Absolutelyfabulous (Tony)

Colt who made his debut at Naas in June in a 6f maiden, finishing 14th beaten 10 l behind Lucky Vega, then in August, in a 7f maiden at the Curragh was third, 4 ¾ l behind Thunder Moon. In August at Cork he was third in another 7f maiden, beaten 8 ¾ ,l behind Erzindjan, then reappeared at Dundalk in March, and won a 1m maiden by 4 ¾ l from Golden Lyric. He has no big race entries, but like many Galileo’s will improve this season, and should certainly be placed to win a race or two.

High class 2 year old who made his debut at Naas in June, finishing 5th in a 6f maiden, beaten 2 ½ l behind Lucky Vega, then at Ascot in June, won the 7f Chesham listed stakes by 2 ½ l from March Law, then in July took the 7f group 2 Vintage stakes by 2l from Dubious Company, and finished with 2nd at Keenland in the 1m grade 1 Juvenile turf, beaten 3l by Fire at Will. He in the English and Irish 2000 guineas, and the Irish Derby, but not the English Derby.

2021 Flat profile - Amhran Na Bhfiann

4 y B C Galileo – Alluring Park (Tony)

Interesting pick, and another Galileo colt who looks to be improving with age. He made his debut at the Curragh in August 2019, finishing 13th beaten 17 ½ l behind Sinawaan, then was not seen until last June when he finished in a 1m 2f maiden at Leopardstown, beaten 2l behind Tiger Moth. He then finished 3rd at Epsom in the Derby (who remembers that ?? apart from Tony ), finishing 6l behind Serpentine, then in August at Naas, perhaps surprisingly failed to win a 1m 2f maiden, finishing 2nd 2l behind Zawara. He got off the mark in some style at Dundalk recently, winning a 1m 4f maiden by 13 l from Boola Boola, and with group 1 entry  in the Coronation Cup, and a Group 2 entry in the Yorkshire Cup, should pick up some points this season.

Trainer A P O’Brien

2021 Flat profile - Al Zaraqaan

4 y br c Golden Horn – Asheerah (Bob)

Smart and improving 4 year old, he made his debut at Newmarket in October 2019, finishing 10th, beaten 9 ¾ l behind King Leonidas, then reappeared last June at Doncaster, winning a 1m 2f novice stakes by 1 ¼ l from Semser. He then won a 1m 3f novice stakes at Kempton in November, beating Shining Example 2l. He reappeared in March winning a 1m 3f handicap at Kempton by 3l from Al Mighwar (received 3lb),  and with group 2 entries, is obviously considered capable of stepping up again, and prove a very good single pick

2021 Flat profile - Alpine Star

4 y ch f Sea The Moon – Alpha Tauri (Cliff)

Smart 2 year old filly, she made her debut at Leopardstown in July, finishing 3rd in a 7f fillies maiden, beaten 1 ¾ l behind Love, then in August took a 7f Median Auction maiden stakes at Galway  by 3 ¼ l from Santiago (gave 5lb), and finished the season with victory in the 7f group 2 Debutante stakes at the Curragh over 7f in August, beating Petite Mustique a short head. She started last season with victory at Ascot taking the 1m group1 Coronation stakes by 4 ¼ l from Sharing, then was 2nd at Chantilly in the 1m 2f group 1 Prix De Diane, beaten a short neck by Fancy Blue, then in August was 2nd at Deauville in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois, beaten ¾ l by Palace Pier, and finished with a short neck 2nd to Tarnawa in the 1m 2f group 1 Prix de l’Opera. Hopefully she will make her mark in the top 1m – 1m 2f races this season and has an entry in the Group 1 Tattersall Gold Cup.

Trainer Mrs J Harrington

2021 Flat Profile - Angel Bleu

2y bc Dark Angel – Cercle De La Vie ( Martin)

One a few 2 year olds in the strings this season, he made his debut at Leicester on 9th April, finishing 3rd beaten 5l behind Gubbass in a 5f maiden, then on 25th April, won a 5f novice stakes by 1 ¼ l from Raging. He doesn’t have any fancy entries, but like all the 2 year olds chosen, will be fun to follow, and he could pick up some useful races this season

Trainer R Beckett

2021 Flat profile - Alenquer

3 y bc Alderflug – Wild Blossom (Steve)

Potentially top class colt, he made his debut at Newbury in August last August, winning a 7 f maiden by 2 ¾ l from Tasfeeq, then in September finished 2nd in a 1m listed Stakes at Haydock, beaten 3 ¼ l by Fancy Moon on soft ground. He made an eye catching reappearance at Sandown recently winning the 1m 2f group 3 classic trail by ½ l from Adayar, and is currently not entered in the Derby, but could yet be supplemented. Wherever he goes next, he looks worth following

2021 Flat - Editor's Introduction

Enable has retired but we still have some old favourites flying the flag for the older brigade in Stradivarius,  Love, Palace Pier and Battash, Logician, Alpine Star, to name a few.

The 2 year old form looked very muddled, with no out standing colt or filly, so I am sure there will probably be some surprise improvers, Santa Barbara, 5/2 favourite for the 1000 guineas after just winning an ordinary maiden is a prime example, given a number of 2 year old fillies have much stronger form.
The Irish situation is complicated further with 3 O’Briens now training and Coolmore splitting their resources between them.

Cod has another Tiger in his tank, a few 2 year olds are starting to be picked, a developing trend. We have 111 different horses, and I have covered 30 here, so good luck all, enjoy

Regards

The Editor

2020/21 Boozy Punter Horse of the Season

Congratulations to the connections of...

Shishkin

A rule change at the start of the season meant that Cliff carried forward double points rights on Shishkin for the season. Martin, Neil, Peej and Steve were also on board with the selection.

We didn't have to wait long for the reappearance as Shishkin landed odds of 1/6 in a four-runner field, coming home by 23 lengths in a Beginners Chase at Kempton on 23 November. Nicky Henderson's stable star returned to Kempton on 27 December for a 13-length win at 1/3F in the Wayward Lad.

The final Cheltenham prep race was at Doncaster at the end of January. Nico De Boinville was on board as usual and went on from four out to win at 1/7F by eight and a half lengths by Eldorado Allen. That rival got 'closest' at Cheltenham in the Arkle but it was a 12 length victory this time for the 4/9 favourite.

The final appearance of the season came at Aintree. It perhaps wasn't the most convincing performance by a 1/8 shot but De Boinville had enough horse to ease to a three and a quarter length win over Funambule Sivola.

Already 6/4 favourite for next year's Champion Chase there could be plenty more points to come from Shishkin over the coming years.

Our top three this season were:

236.2 - Shishkin (22.2 + 42.2 + 42.2 + 77.4 + 52.2)
155.6 - Thyme Hill (48.8 + 24 + 82.8)
154.8 - Honeysuckle (51.4 + 51.6 + 51.8)

2020/21 Jumps Edition 25 - The Ed is celebrating

Headlines

Luna Shines Bright at Chepstow

Report

We start at Chepstow on Friday where Gran Luna (Bob), took her chance in the 2m 3f mares novice hurdle, Chased leader, not fluent 1st, jumped left 2nd, pushed along and disputed lead when mistake 2 out, soon led and ridden, 4 lengths ahead and mistake last, pushed out run-in, winning by 4l. She gets 24 points.

Before this Cod offered the Editor the draw, which the Ed declined

In the 2m 6f grade 2 chase Frodon (Cod, Neil), went to post, Jumped well, led, not fluent 17th, shaken up and hard pressed 2 out, headed and 1 length down last, ridden and rallied run-in, led again towards finish, winning gamely by a neck. He gets 21.3 points.

So at this point Cod was in front and the Editor needed a winner, and Cod again offered the Ed a draw, which I declined.

In the 2m grade 1 Celebration Chase Greaneteen ( Cliff), went to post, Jumped well, in touch with leaders, headway and went second 3rd, led going easily just after 3 out, shaken up and went clear 2 out, 5 lengths ahead last, pushed out final 110yds, winning comfortably by 3 ¾ l. The Punter pays tribute  to Lorna Brooke

Lorna Brooke has died following a heavy fall at Taunton this month, the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) has announced in a statement. The amateur jockey was treated on track and airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol on April 8 after falling from Orchestrated, trained by her mother Lady Susan Brooke, in the 2m7f handicap chase.
Brooke, a 7lb claiming amateur, rode 17 winners in Britain and Ireland, including when landing the inaugural running of a Ladies Handicap Chase at Fairyhouse on Moonlone Lane for Paul Stafford.

Tiger Roll, Clan Des Obeaux, Mister Fisher, Real Steel, all go to post in the Betfair Bowl

Buveur D’Air will bid to roll back the years and win a second Betway Aintree Hurdle. Nicky Henderson’s 10-year-old lifted Thursday’s Grade One prize over two-and-a-half miles in 2017, and was runner-up in 2019. Silver Streak, Abracadabras, McFabulous also have entries

Richard Johnson,With thanks to Peej, following his retirement, some stats - He hasn’t been prolific in the Punter competition with just 21 wins in the last nine seasons. (ninth in the overall list)
His best season was 2014/15 when he picked up five wins
His last winner in Punter colours was on Sporting John in the Scilly Isles at Sandown in February.

Johnson highlighted winning Cheltenham's 'big four' races among his highlights in the saddle, with his first Gold Cup winner Looks Like Trouble living out his days on Johnson's farm in Herefordshire, along with another of his Cheltenham Festival winners Menorah.
"To win the four big festival races within four years was the stuff of dreams, but I didn’t know how lucky I was," he added. "When you’re young you don’t understand, you think it will carry on forever."

For all his exploits at Cheltenham and Aintree, Balthazar King's two wins at Craon in western France – arguably the biggest jumping test anywhere in Europe bar possibly the Pardubice – stand out. Having landed the prize in 2013 on only Johnson's third ride in France, Balthazar King returned a year later off the back of an unlucky fall in the Prix Anjou Loire Challenge and, though showing his usual cat-like agility over the hugely varied obstacles, never travelled with his usual fluency. Turning back towards the stands for the final time Johnson was pushing away in fifth, while the French commentator intoned with an air of disbelief: "Balthazar King seems beaten." Johnson pulled his mount to the outside before conjuring a remarkable surge, passing his four rivals in the space of barely half a furlong either side of the final fence to win eased down.

Paul Nolan is planning another big-race tilt with Latest Exhibition at Fairyhouse next month, although a decision on which race his stable star runs in at the Easter festival in will be delayed. Nolan, fresh from saddling Mrs Milner to win the Pertemps Final, opted to sidestep Cheltenham with Latest Exhibition, who has the options of the Irish Grand National on April 5 or the Gold Cup Novice Chase the previous day.

His chosen target could depend on Envoi Allen's participation in the latter, as Nolan explained: “A lot will depend on where Envoi Allen runs. I would say for Latest Exhibition it’s 50-50 between the Irish Grand National and the novice chase. It will be left right up until the last minute."

On Latest Exhibition, runner-up to Monkfish on his last two starts: Nolan added: “If someone was to tell me at the beginning of the season that the best horse in my yard would have a beginners' chase won at this time of year, and only a beginners' chase, I would have been shocked. I will try to rectify that at Fairyhouse.”

Cheltenham Festival winner Galvin will not run in the Irish National, but an outing in the Coral Scottish Grand National is still a possibility. The seven-year-old quickened up smartly to win the National Hunt Chase last week, proving stamina is no issue in the process. A second-season novice, he was transferred from Gordon Elliott to Ian Ferguson by owner Ronnie Bartlett before the Festival, but with Galvin having spent his early days with Ferguson, the handler already knew the horse well.

“There’s a possibility he could run in the Scottish National, but definitely not the Irish, – it will come too soon,” said Ferguson. “He’s been entered at Ayr, so we’ll see how he is between now and then. It looks to be coming up at the right time.

Dan Skelton is excited at the prospect of stepping Allmankind up in trip after he confirmed his Grade 1-winning stable star will spearhead the trainer's powerful team for the Scottish Grand National meeting at Ayr next month.
Paul Nicholls hopes the application of first-time headgear can revive the fortunes of Clan Des Obeaux as he bids to make it third time lucky in the Betway Bowl at next week’s Randox Grand National Festival at Aintree.

Paul Nicholls hopes dual Grade One hero Frodon can sign his season off on a winning note by taking advantage of a drop in grade and distance at Sandown next month. The 11-times champion jumps trainer intends to run the nine-year-old in the extended two-and-three-quarter-mile Grade Two contest, which he captured in 2019 with the now-retired Black Corton.

Harry Fry is mulling over a potential big Flat target for Metier after confirming this season's impressive Tolworth Hurdle winner will not be heading to Aintree next week.

Tiger Roll heads 60 horses still in contention for the BoyleSports Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse.
With connections deciding against bidding for an historic third victory in the Randox Grand National at Aintree on Saturday week, Tiger Roll is set to run in either the Irish equivalent on Monday or Aintree’s Betway Bowl three days later. Eddie O’Leary, racing manager for owners Gigginstown House Stud, said following Wednesday’s forfeit stage for the Irish Grand National: “No decision has been made on where Tiger Roll will run yet. “It will either be the Irish National or the Bowl.”

RULE CHANGE PROPOSAL
Tony wishes to propose the following rule change to the retained single picks rights.
Proposal is that retained rights last only  1 season, and in the 2nd season only the owner has the rights to the horse, but gets only single Points.
So as an example, I initially had Shiskin as a single pick. This season under Tony’s proposal, I would have kept it exclusively but received only single points.
Pease send yes to adopt, no reject by close of play 7th April, or submit amendments to the proposal
