2020/21 Jumps Profile - Epatante

6 y bm No Risk At All – Kadjara (Cliff,Steve, Peej)

At the start of the season J.P Mcmanus was no doubt expecting to have the favourite for the Champion hurdle in March, but this mare would not have been the one at the top of the list, but with injury hitting Buveur D’air, and this mare's rapid progression, that is what happened.

She made her debut at Saint Malo in August 2017, finishing 2nd in a 1m 4f 3 year old stakes, beaten a neck by Extra Noire, then in September at Le Lion- D’Angers, won a similar event by 6l from Envirante Passion. In November at Saint- Cloud, she won a 1m 4f Grade 1 by 3l from Eveilduboulay, then had a year off, and moved across the water to Nicky Henderson. She made her English debut at Kempton in November 2018, winning a 2m novice hurdle by 3 1/22 l from Ey Up Rocky, then followed up at Exeter in February last year, taking a 2m 1f novice hurdle by 3 ½ l from Makety (received 6 lb), and finished the season with a disappointing 9th in the mares novice hurdle at the Cheltenham festival, beaten 9 ¼ l behind Elgantine Du Seuil, when 15/ 8 f.

She reappeared at Newbury last November, winning a 2m listed handicap hurdle by 6l from stable mate French Crusader ( received 2lb ) , then in December won the 2m grade 1 Christmas hurdle at Kempton by 5l from Silver Streak. It was a sign of the way the Champion hurdle fell apart that saw her go of 2/1f  in March, but she could only beat what turned up, which she duly did to become the Champion Hurdler, beating Sharjah 3l. She obviously sets the standard for this season, but will face stiff opposition and not least, quite possibly from another mare, the unbeaten Honeysuckle, in what looks an open division.
