A big points earner for Peej last season he made his debut at Turtulla in November 2021, finishing 4th in a 3m , 4y geldings maiden, point beaten 19 l by Making Country, then in December at Borris House, was 2nd in a similar event, beaten 1 l by P[ath d’Oroux. He moved to Rebecca Curtis and reappeared in December 2023 in a 2m 3wf novice hurdle, finishing 2nd beaten 6l by Isaac Des Obeaux, (gave 2lb), then in January last year was 2nd in a 2m 5f novice hurdle, beaten 6 ½ l by Awaythelad. In February at Haydock he was 4th beaten 60 l by Now Is The Hour in a 3m grade 2 hurdle, then in March at Chepstow, won a 2m 7f maiden hurdle by 18 l from Bertie Wooster (received 5lb). He followed up at Bangor in April, winning a 2m 7f novice hurdle by 1 l from Grand Albert,
He reappeared at Chepstow in October in a 2m 7f handicap chase, finishing 2nd beaten 2l by Destroytheevidence ( gave 8lb), then in November at Aintree, won a 3m 1f novice limited handicap chase by 15 l from Uncle Bert (received 7 lb). He followed up at Cheltenham in December, winning another 3m 1f limited novice handicap chase by 2 ¾ l from Transmission (gave 2 lb). In February this year at Newbury he was 3rd in a 3m handicap hurdle, beaten 5 ½ l by Santos Blue (received 5 lb), then in March at Cheltenham, won the 3m 6f novice handicap chase by 4 ½ l from Rock My Way(received 3 lb). He finished the season with victory at Fairyhouse winning the 3m 5f Irish grand national handicap chase by 3 ¼ l from Any Second Now (received 2lb).
He made a winning reappearance at Newbury recently, in a 3m handicap hurdle, it was intended as a pipe opener before his first chase assignment this year, and surprised his trainer. He gave lumps of weight all round, beating Bill Baxter (received 19 lb), by 1 ½ l.
Still only 8, he will initially be aimed at the graded staying chase with the Gold Cup the long term plan. If he falls slightly short he is a natural for the Grand National.
