Jonbon will miss the Grand National meeting after not being declared for Friday's JCB Melling Chase (3.30), denying him the chance to extend his unbeaten record at Aintree. Henderson said: “Everything’s fine with him. We’ve had a long chat about it and decided to keep him for Sandown.

"We just felt he’s had two hard races in quick succession. The Ascot race was tough and Nico [de Boinville]’s view was that he might have been a bit flat at Cheltenham.

Willie Mullins has been dealt a blow after the top-class Ballyburn was ruled out for the rest of this season and the next campaign due to injury. The eight-year-old looked near to his top-class best when finishing runner-up behind Home By The Lee in the Stayers' Hurdle at this month's Cheltenham Festival. However, he will be off the track for a significant period of time following his setback.

Mullins told the Sporting Life: "Ballyburn has unfortunately sustained an injury that will rule him out for the rest of this season and next year too. It's very disappointing given how well he ran at Cheltenham."

Nicky Henderson described Sir Gino as "different class" after he had to be put down after failing to recover from an infection, adding that the loss of his star hurdler will "leave an awful hole in Seven Barrows". The six-year-old fractured his pelvis in the Unibet Hurdle at Cheltenham in January and picked up the infection while recovering.

"It's horrible and we're going to miss him," Henderson said. "Karolina [Wernerova, groom] has looked after him all along and Dan [Williams] used to ride him every day. From the very beginning we knew he was different class. He could do anything, and his work was always brilliant."

A 21st-century first happened at the recent Cheltenham Festival. Gaelic Warrior became the first horse to win the Gold Cup having also landed the Arkle earlier in their career.

In the 2m grade 1 Champion Hurdle Lossiemouth ( Neil), Brighterdaysahead (Bob), took their chances,
Lossiemouth, Travelled strongly, soon raced in second, led on turn after 2 out, ridden and went clear final 110yds, won going away, winning impressively by 6 ½ l. She gets 79.8 points.

Brighterdaysahead, Prominent early, soon led, headed on turn after 2 out, jumped left last, no extra run-in, 2nd beaten 6 ½ l. She gets 26.8 points.

Yesterday in the 2m grade1 Champion Chase Il Etait Temps (Neil, Peej), went to post, Soon midfield, smooth headway from 3 out, led and jumped slightly left 2 out, clear when pecked on landing last, ridden briefly and went further clear run-in, winning readily by 10l. He gets 53.5 points

Today at Cheltenham
1.20 Punter Entries, Bambino Fever, Kingston Queen
Bambino Fever was a good winner of a maiden hurdle last time but at 11/10 fav is there on an assumption of big improvement and she has a bit to find on a few of these on ratings. Kingston Queen won a grade 2 last time and at 25/1 is a decent ew player. The unbeaten Oldschool Outlaw at 9/2 will do for me.

2.00 Punter Entries  Regents Stroll,
Regents Stroll is 11/2 jf and holds a decent chance but was beaten here last time. Unbeaten course and distance winner Sixmilebridge at 9/1 is the one for me.

2.40 Punter Entries Wodhoo
Unbeaten this season Wodhoo is 8/11 fav and this should be a match with Jade De Grugy who has been chasing this season but is a grade 1 winning hurdler and is 2 points better on hurdles ratings. At 7/2 she is worth a little interest against the fav.

3.20 Punter Enties Teauphoo, Ballyburn, , Hewick, Doddiethegreat,
It is hard to see Doddiethegreat or Hewick in the shake up, Ballyburn should go well, but has twice been behind Teauphoo, However the big danger could come from the improving Ma Shantou who is reported in great form and at 6/1 gets my vote.

4.00 Punter Entries Fact To File, Banbridge, Impaire Et Pasee, Jonbon.
The big surprise was Jonbon being declared along with Fact To File.
Jonbon has improved with the step up in trip, but no 10 year old has ever won this. Fact To File is clear on ratings and if returning to last years form will win. Impaire Et Passe should follow him home

Friday
1.20 Punter Entries Macho Man
Willie Mullins has the first 3 in the betting and Macho Man was behind the fav for this last time. On ratings, 2nd in the betting Selma De Vary is best and with the 7lb mares allowance at 9/2 looks the bet.

2.40 Punter Entries Dino Blue, Diva Luna
Dino Blue won this last year and has done nothing wrong since, so is worth her place at the head of the market, but 13/8 against 21 Diva Lunar and Panic Attack looks short.
Diva Luna is highly regarded by Ben Pauling and is unbeaten over fences and looks a solid ew price at 9/1, Panic Attack has been very impressive and at 9/2 will do for me.

3.20  Punter Entries Doctor Du Mesnil
Doctor Du Mesnil is held by the Passing Wife and at 25/1 has a place claims at best. Thedeviluo is a solid shout at 9/2.

4.00 Punter Entries The Jukebox Man, Gaelic Warrior, Jango Baie, Inothewayurthinkin, Haiti Coleurs, Grey Dawning
The Punter horses fill the first 6 in the betting and it’s 4/1 joint favs.
Inothewayurthinkin won this last year, but has a poor season to put behind him but has been backed as if a big run is expected, but it’s a leap of faith. Jango Baie needs to find a bit more and was ½ l behind the Improving The Jukeboxman at Kempton, and The Jukebox man is 4/1 co fav with Gaelic Warrior. And I like The Jukebox man and the improving Haiti Coleurs at 8/1
4.40 Wonderwall is a course and distance winner, tops the ratings and at 5/1 looks a standout, and you can sing it after .
5.20  Punter Entry Hot Fuss in a tricky race is difficult to weigh up. he won at Windsor but disappointed at Kelso last time, he has an outside place chance and at 40/1 is priced fairly

1.20 Supreme Novice Hurdle
Punter Entries, Mydaddypaddy, Sober Glory, Baron Noir, Macho Man
Old Park Star is favourite for this, and is unbeaten over hurdles and has some wide winning margins to his name and has to be respected, Mydaddypaddy has a bit to find on form, and was a beaten fav last time, Baron Noir has done little wrong and is a decent ew price at 25/1 but I am going with Sober Glory, who also has 3 wide winning margins to his name, and I think is over priced at 14/1.

2.00 Arkle novice chase
Punter Entries, Lulamba, Salvator Mundi, Mambonumberfive, Be Aware
Be Aware has been 2nd 4 times including a 9 ½ l beating by Lulamba and others appeal more, Salvator Mundi had disappointed twice before a wide margin win last time out in a Beginners chase, a high class hurdler he is a big price at 16/1, Mambonumberfive is unlikely to run here, but if he does 50/1 is way to big, and Lulamba is 13 /8 f, which is short enough but has the best form by some way, though Steel Ally, unbeaten in 3 looks over priced at 16/1 and Kopek Des Borges, whilst lacking experience is classy but to short for me at 7/4. I think Lulamba will win but an ew saver on Steel Ally or Salvator Mundi are plays.

3.20 Ultima Premier Handicap Chase
Punter Entries, Jagwar, Handstands, Myretown, Wendigo, Johnnywho, Resplendent Grey, Henry’s Friend
Wendigo is due to run in the Brown’s Advisory, Handstands has been a bit disappointing and off 11-12 makes little appeal, Myretown ran a shocker last time but is a course and distance winner having won this last year, and off 10-13, has place claims at least at 12/1. Johnnywho has been moderate this season and makes little appeal, Henry’s Friend has similary been disappointing and is easily passed over, Resplendent Grey ran well behind Protektorat last time but has 11-10, and probably place claims at best at 25/1, which comes to Jagwar who is 11/2 fav off 11-9. He has done little wrong in 2 placed efforts but looks in the grip of the handicapper, so I think Lucinda Russel has the 2 best ew shouts with King Of Answers and Myretown both 12/1.

4.00 Champion Hurdle
Punter Entries, The New Lion, Brighterdaysahead, Lossiemouth, Anzadam, Ballyburn
This is likely to be a poor renewal and the fact The New Lion is 9/4 fav says it all. Lossiemouth at 7/2 is priced as  runner in the mares hurdle instead, Anzadam has disappointed this season, Ballyburn has been racing over a lot further and is unlikely to run, so with Golden Ace continues to be under rated and at 7/1 is a great price, but it may lie  between Brighterdaysahead and The New Lion ,and at 7/2 I will be  siding with Brighterdaysahead.

4.40 Plate Premier Handicap Chase
Punter Entries, Handstands, Mambonumberfive
Mambonumberfive is not certain to run, Handstands off 12-0 makes little appeal and so I will go ew with Donnacha at 12/1

5.20 National Hunt Challenge Cup, Novice Handicap Chase
Punter Entries, The Jukebox Kid is not a certain runner as he may be kept for the Irish National but Ben Pauling says he is tempted here and feels he has a big chance. If he does go 16/1 is a decent ew play

Wednesday

1.20 Turners Novice Hurdle
Punter Entries, No Drama This End, Baron Noir, Doctor Du Mesnil
Baron Noir is improving and has won his last 2 but has abit to find on ratings, though he looks over priced at 40/1, Doctor Du Mesnil, has finished 2nd on his last 2 starts and has a bit more to find than Baron Noir, is a 50/1 shot. So No Drama This End is 4/1 fav, is a course and distance winner and looks good value at that price.

2.00 Brown Advisory Novice Chase
Punter Entries Final Demand, Wendigo
Final Demand is yet to win beyond 2m 5f, Wendigo has won his last 2 over 3m, so although Final Demand is 7/2 f, I will go with Wendigo, who at 8/1 looks good value and is very strongly fancied by Ben Pauling.

2.40 MGM Cup Handicap Hurdle
Punter Entries Kateria , Iberico Lord, Celtic Dino
Kateria has been disappointing this season, but has slipped down the handicap, but looks short enough at 14/1. Celtic Dino and Iberico Lord have similar chances, Sam Thomas says Celtic Dino is in very good form and gives him a strong chance, Nicky Henderson says stepping up in trip has helped Iberico Lord and whilst he has gone up 8lb for his last win holds solid ew claims at 16/1.

3.20 Cross Country Limited Handicap Chase
No Punter Entries
Not Suprisingly course and distance winners Stumptown and Favori de Champdou, head both the weights and the market. Final Orders is another Course and distance winner and receives 15 lb from Stumptown and 10 lb from Favori Champdou, and Gavin Cromwell expects a big run and at 10/1 is a sound ew play. For big ew play Nicky Richards says Famous bridge has schooled really well over these types of obstacles and has loads of stamina, has a low weight if he gets in and could be a bit of fun off 40/1.

4.00 Queen Mother Champion Chase
Punter Entries, Calico, Il Etait Temps, Jonbon, L’Eau Du Sud, Majborough, Quilixios, Thistle Ask
This is all if, but’s maybe, as now Marine Nationale is a non runner options for a few these are under review, as Jonbon was initially going to the Ryan Air, Nicky Henderson is now undecided.  Quilixios has not been out yet so can’t be fancied even if he turns up, Calico is due to go in the Grand Annual, and that would still appear the sensible option, L’Eau Du Sud does run and Dan Skelton is pretty bullish about him and at 6/1 is a nice price. Thistle Ask doesn’t run but this is Majbrough’s target and he is 6/4 fav which looks way to short and I would stick with L’Eau du Sud ew.

4.40 Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase
Punter Entries, Calico, Be Aware, Mambonumberfive
Mambonumberfive has other entries but is a big player off 11-5 if going and 16/1 is a nice price. Be Aware heads the market at 8/1 and off 11-6 looks in the handicappers grip after 4 2nd’s. Calico is a course and distance winner but has 11-12 and no winner has carried any thing like that before. So the Improving Vanderpoel off 11-0 at 10/ looks the one to be on.

News
Last year's Champion Chase hero Marine Nationale has been ruled out of a defence of his crown next week by trainer Barry Connell after he was found to have a sore neck on Tuesday morning.
"He was very sore through his neck this morning," said Connell. "We had the vets in this morning and they put him on pain relief medication and we're just going to be out of time with withdrawal times."

Jonbon’s participation at the Cheltenham Festival hinges on whether Fact To File lines up in the Ryanair Chase or is supplemented for the Gold Cup, with Nicky Henderson revealing he will "in all probability" head to the Aintree Bowl at the Grand National meeting instead.

The Seven Barrows trainer has ruled out a tilt at the Champion Chase, in which Jonbon was beaten last year, leaving the Ryanair as the only option after he stepped up in trip to land the Ascot Chase over the same distance. However, with both horses owned by JP McManus, Henderson says it is more likely Jonbon skips Cheltenham and instead tackles three miles for the first time at Aintree, a meeting he has won the 2m4f Melling Chase at in each of the last two years.

Narciso Has misses Cheltenham after picking up an injury "It's bad luck for everybody Frank Berry, racing manager to McManus told the Punter. "We'll know a bit more in a week's time but we're hopeful we might have him back for Punchestown.

Nicky Henderson has described the decision to end Constitution Hill's career over jumps and concentrate solely on the Flat as "one of the hardest" of his 48-year training career, but one that has "lifted some of the weight off our shoulders".

The 2023 Champion Hurdle winner was clear favourite with most bookmakers on Wednesday morning for the feature race on day one of the Cheltenham Festival, despite falling in three of his last four starts over hurdles, including when attempting to regain his title last season. But after lengthy discussions with owner Michael Buckley, Henderson announced Constitution Hill would not feature over hurdles again, despite plenty of schooling with jumping guru Yogi Breisner.

Henderson told The Punter "His work has been brilliant, and he's technically the best jumper I've seen over hurdles in my life, but I just can't risk it. Michael was here, and we said the same thing. We both just agreed we couldn't face any more of him over them.

News
The team behind Randox Grand National hope Myretown are favouring a run at Haydock on Saturday as they seek a rise in the weights for their star to secure his passage to the Aintree showpiece.
Joint-trainers Michael Scudamore and Lucinda Russell are eager to get a run into the nine-year-old before the Grand National weights are revealed next week, and are leaning towards the William Hill Half A Mill Grand National Trial Handicap Chase in preference to an alternative option at Kelso.

Paul Nicholls will rely on one of his most faithful servants in Pic D'Orhy as he bids to keep his recent hot streak going in Saturday's feature Betfair Ascot Chase, a race he described on Monday as "a straight shootout" between the dual winner and Jonbon.

News
It is with sadness The Punter records the death of a little Legend of these pages Langer Dan who was a fixture of the Cod Squad, Dan Skelton said: "He was quite a remarkable little horse. He was always one of those horses who everyone loved, and we felt the same way. He was his own character. He captured the imagination of everyone because he was a competitor."

Langer Dan made 27 appearances for Skelton, and as well as two victories at the Cheltenham Festival, he won a Grade 3 at Aintree in 2022, the Grade 3 Paddy Power Imperial Cup in March 2021, and finished second behind subsequent Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs at Cheltenham the following week.

Also sadly Kalif Du Berlais was fatally injured at Kempton on Saturday, Paul Nichols said "He was a beautiful horse who had already brought so much joy to his owners and our team, crowned by a brilliant victory at Aintree last year. He showed such immense talent and promise, with a bright future ahead of him and we were lucky to train him in Ditcheat.

Lossiemouth has drifted for the Champion Hurdle, with support coming for Sir Gino as the market increasingly suggests the seven-year-old will instead defend her Mares’ Hurdle title.

Having been 9-2 with Paddy Power on Wednesday, the Willie Mullins-trained mare was eased to 6-1 for the Champion Hurdle on Thursday, a move which coincided with Sir Gino being cut to 5-4 (from 6-4) at the head of the market. Paddy Power cited Sir Gino's emphatic success in the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day as the key factor behind the move.

In contrast, Lossiemouth’s price for the Mares’ Hurdle has shortened and she is now 2-1 second favourite, having been 5-2, behind the Gordon Elliott-trained Wodhooh at 15-8. Both Unibet and William Hill make the pair 7-4 joint-favourites.

Rebecca Curtis believes her Welsh Grand National winner Haiti Couleurs has a "serious chance" in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and has not ruled out running him again beforehand. The nine-year-old recorded a famous victory at Chepstow over Christmas and has emerged from that three-length win over O'Connell in sparkling form according to his trainer.

Last season's Cheltenham Festival winner Jagwar will look to propel himself into contention for the Ryanair Chase in March on his return to the track on Trials day later this month.

News
Britain's two-mile chasing division has an unlikely new pretender as Thistle Ask followed up his rout in the Haldon Gold Cup with a Desert Orchid Chase demolition. A new calibre of opposition will lie in wait – including last year's winner Jonbon – when Thistle Ask steps up to Grade 1 company for his next start in the BetMGM Clarence House Chase at Ascot on January 17, but Skelton is not shying away from the challenge.

He said: "He's going to go up against different types of horses now, but we'll welcome all-comers and we'll give it our best shot. It's very tempting to have a go at a Champion Chase, but if you want all ticks in your boxes, then he's got to go right-handed. If he wins a Clarence House he’d have to go for it, but if he didn’t and still ran well, then you’d have to keep him super fresh for the Celebration Chase.”

News
Keith Donoghue is convinced the real Inothewayurthinkin will stand up at Leopardstown next Sunday – a fitter, sharper and better version than the one he rode when beaten out of sight in the John Durkan Chase on his reappearance.

Jamie Snowden's yard has excelled since the start of the core jumps season and the trainer will seek to end the year on a high when Wendigo bids for Boxing Day glory in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase.
Owned by the Racing Club syndicate, the six-year-old produced a career-best performance when winning the Grade 2 John Francome Novices’ Chase at Newbury last month on just his second start over fences.

No Drama This End, one of Britain's most talked-about novice hurdlers this season, looks set to put his lofty reputation on the line in Monday's Coral Challow Novices' Hurdle (3.00). Harry Cobden has already been booked to ride and is one of 13 entered in the 2m4½f Grade 1 at Newbury. Victory for Paul Nicholls could see him enhance his strong Cheltenham Festival credentials further.

Diva Luna may have looked good on paper last season but Ben Pauling believes best is still yet to come as he targets the Grade 1 Scilly Isles for his exciting novice chase.

Dan Skelton has ruled out a trip to Ireland over Christmas with his Betfair Chase winner Grey Dawning.
He was given an entry in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown where potential opponents could have included Galopin Des Champs, Fact To File and Inothewayurthinkin.

But he'll instead wait for Trials Day next month. Speaking to The Punter on Saturday the trainer said: “He’s going to come back to Cheltenham for the Cotswold Chase."

News
Champion Hurdle contender William Munny will now be redirected to the Dublin Racing Festival after suffering a minor setback on Saturday morning which has ruled him out of the Christmas period.
The seven-year-old has been well supported for the Champion Hurdle in the last week, particularly in the aftermath of last weekend's dramatic Fighting Fifth, and he is now a general 8-1 chance for the festival day one highlight.

Josh Guerriero believes there is significant improvement to come from the progressive Jagwar and hopes the Cheltenham Festival winner can kickstart the yard's season in Saturday's December Gold Cup.
The fast-changing Champion Hurdle picture was given another twist on Sunday as Gordon Elliott opened the door for Brighterdaysahead to potentially return over hurdles at Christmas.

With State Man ruled out for the season, Constitution Hill's future over hurdles in doubt after his latest crashing fall in the Fighting Fifth and William Munny's return delayed, there have been recent moves to add others into what is a chaotic picture.

Lossiemouth is the Champion Hurdle favourite, a position she solidified with an effortless return in the Morgiana Hurdle last month, while Sir Gino looks increasingly likely to make his return to action in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton for Nicky Henderson. And now Elliott has hinted the planned chasing campaign of Brighterdaysahead could be off, with Gigginstown's brilliant six-year-old mare a candidate to be supplemented for the December Hurdle at Leopardstown.
