Shishkin Tribute

After a winning a bumper at Kempton in March 2019 Shishkin made a first appearance in the competition in the 2019/20 season. It was an inauspicious start, falling at the second when favourite for a Newbury maiden hurdle in December.

Cliff only had to wait until January 2020 for points though when the soon-to-be stable star dominated a Newbury novice hurdle. It was a similar story at Huntingdon the following month and then Nico De Boinville partnered the horse to a head victory over Abracadabras in the Supreme Novices Hurdle.

2019/20 - 4 runs, 3 wins, 123.4 points

It was straight over fences the following season, with Cliff now being joined by Martin, Neil, Peej and Steve in looking for points.

Shishkin was 'unchallenged' at 1/6 in a Beginners Chase at Kempton in November and followed up 'easily' in the Wayward Lad at the same track the following month. There was another easy win in the Lightning Chase at Doncaster at the end of January before another odds-on demonstration in the Arkle, winning by 12 lengths. This season Shishkin added Aintree to the victory tour, running out a comfortable winner of the Maghull at 1/8F.

2020/21 - 5 runs, 5 wins, 236.2 Points (for Cliff, half for the rest)

The same Punters kept the faith the following season as Shishkin was lined up for a tilt at the Champion Chase. That started perfectly with a 10 length victory over Greaneteen in the Desert Orchid at Kempton then a length victory over Energumene in the Clarence House at Ascot in an epic race that many consider his best and one of the best two mile contests in recent years.

Did it leave a mark? Was the horse quite the same after this? Certainly not at Cheltenham in the Champion Chase where De Boinville was pushing along after the first and, after a few slack jumps, pulled up after the eighth. Soft going was blamed and there was no trip to Aintree this year.

2021/22 - 3 runs, 2 wins, 121.58 points (for Cliff, half for the rest)

That disappointing performance meant Martin and Peej abandoning the horse for the 2022/23 season. It wasn't the best start to the campaign with Shishkin being kicked before the Tingle Creek (deemed fit to race by the vet) and coming in third, 15 lengths behind Edwardstone.

After wind surgery in January Shishkin was back in the winner's enclosure the following month. The horse seemed back to its very best with a 16 length win in the Ascot Chase. At Cheltenham it was decided to try a longer trip in the 2m 5f Ryanair but the evens favourite hung left and didn't jump that well and finished second behind Envoi Allen. The trip couldn't have been to blame as Shishkin went to Aintree and landed the 3m 1f Aintree Bowl leading just after the last to deny Ahoy Senor by a length and a half.

2022/23 - 4 runs, 2 wins, 161.50 points (for Cliff, half for Neil and Steve)

The same three Punters kept the faith for what was to prove to be Shishkin's last season. It started in odd style when the horse refused to race before the 1965 Chase at Ascot. That upped the pressure on the early season target, the King George. This time De Boinville got the horse to jump off and seemed certain to be involved in the finish until a blunder two out saw the jockey unseated.

There was to be one more win, in Newbury's Denman Chase in February, keeping on well to see off Hitman and Protektorat. The virus in the Henderson stable meant missing a possible tilt at the Gold Cup and there was to be no compensation at Aintree when an eight and three quarters lengths fourth in the Mildmay Chase to Gerri Colombe

2023/24 - 4 runs, 1 win, 63.46 points (for Cliff, half for Neil and Steve)

Overall record

20 runs - 13 wins, 706.14 points

News

The punter pays tribute to Galileo who sadly passed away age 23. He has been a huge influence on our competition both as a race horse then as a stallion. With Godolphin having the 2 best 3 year old colts this season, perhaps the Coolmore domination is starting to wane.

With more than 90 Group or Grade 1 winners in almost two decades of standing at Coolmore Stud, Galileo is now comfortably the most successful stallion in thoroughbred history, having surpassed the tally of his former studmate Danehill last year. Some truly outstanding performers will not make the cut for his greatest sons and daughters but here are five to stand out:

Frankel, Not only the late Sir Henry Cecil-trained masterpiece but also Galileo's, being the best racehorse in modern-day rankings with his unforgettable 2,000 Guineas victory in 2011 part of an unbeaten 14-race career. Following his own retirement a year later, Frankel has evolved into a stallion capable of assuming the mantle of his father and recently sired the winners of both Derbys, Adayar and Hurricane Lane.

New Approach, He became his sire's first Derby winner when holding off Tartan Bearer in 2008, following on from a glittering and unbeaten career as a juvenile which included wins in the Dewhurst and the National Stakes. After two more Group 1s, he has become a Derby-winning sire himself from Dalham Hall Stud through Masar, and sired a Classic winner as recently as May with Mac Swiney in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Highland Reel, Not Galileo's most illustrious offspring given he never managed to land a Classic, but he was by some way his biggest money-earner after landing a remarkable £7,513,355 across 27 starts around the world.

Nighttime, A member of Galileo's first crop born in 2003, she swiftly had her sire's name up in lights when trained by Dermot Weld to claim the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Once retired to the Weld family's Springbank Way Stud, Nightime has been one of the foremost contributors to his ongoing influence as a broodmare sire, most notably as the dam of the popular Eclipse and Juddmonte International hero Ghaiyyath and Man o' War Stakes winner Zhukova.

Rip Van Winkle, It was a family affair for Galileo during 2009 as his son Rip Van Winkle was locking horns with his half-brother, the mighty Sea The Stars, who Rip Van Winkle followed home in the Guineas, Derby and the Eclipse.  The Aidan O'Brien-trained star was Galileo's second-best son behind Frankel on Racing Post Ratings, beating Paco Boy in the Sussex Stakes and going on to further glory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Juddmonte International.

Alpinista could try to emulate her granddam and win a first Group One in the Grosser Preis Von Berlin at Hoppegarten next month. The Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on July 31 is the alternative target for Alpinista, who won the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock on her latest start.

Remembering Flagship Uberalles

Champion Chase hero dies aged 26
Tributes have been paid to top-class two-mile chaser Flagship Uberalles, who passed away on Friday aged 26 at owner JP McManus's Martinstown Stud in County Limerick.
A tough and popular chaser for a variety of trainers when running in the colours of American owner Michael Krystofiak and his wife Elisabeth Gutner before later being sold to McManus, Flagship Uberalles won an epic renewal of the 2002 Queen Mother Champion Chase for Philip Hobbs.
Hobbs said on Saturday: “He was one of the best horses we had through our hands, but he was always a horse who was at his best when fresh. On his best days he was very good.
"He was the first horse we had for JP, and also I think he was the first winner we had for JP when he won at Punchestown. He is certainly among the very best I have trained.”
A maiden in two runs on the Flat for Dermot Weld at three, Flagship Uberalles began to improve as a four-year-old when handled by Pat Flynn, for whom he won his first two starts over hurdles before finishing a very close third to Zafarabad in the Grade 1 Champion Four Year Old Hurdle at Punchestown in 1998.
Flynn recalled: “He was the only horse I had at home who could go with French Ballerina, who was a very good Flat mare and almost broke the track record when she won the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham. He was well able to hold his own with her and he was a phenomenal animal to have. He probably should have won the Grade 1 at Punchestown.”
The son of Accordion was sold later that spring to Krystofiak, and enjoyed some stellar days when trained by Paul Nicholls, winning eight times in all for the multiple champion trainer. Included in this was a run of six straight wins in 1999, which incorporated the Arkle at Cheltenham, the Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree, and in the following season a memorable defeat of Direct Route in a vintage running of the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown.
“We won some nice races with him. He was a proper horse for us and won some very nice races," Nicholls said. "His win in the Arkle with Joe Tizzard on board was my first Cheltenham winner and was probably my most memorable day with him."
Krystofiak sent him briefly to Lambourn trainer Noel Chance, for whom his only win in four starts came in the 2000 running of the Tingle Creek, which had been transferred to Cheltenham, before he was sent to Hobbs, for whom he arguably enjoyed his finest season.
A third straight victory in the Tingle Creek in 2001, back at its Sandown home, under amateur Robert Widger, was an ideal launchpad for the season, and he was not seen out again until he produced a battling performance on rain-softened ground under Richard Johnson to land his sole Champion Chase victory in March 2002.
His final run for his American owners came when pulled up on his sole try at 3m in the King George at Kempton later that year, after which he was sold to McManus. He only managed one victory for McManus, when landing the 2003 running of the Grade 1 BMW Champion Chase at Punchestown, but he did fill the runner-up spot to Azertyuiop in the 2004 Queen Mother Champion Chase, before he was retired to Martinstown at the end of a disappointing 2004-05 season.
McManus's racing manager Frank Berry said: “He was a great age and he had a lovely retirement. He was a great old horse for us, he won the Grade 1 at Punchestown for us and ran a blinder when he was second in the Champion Chase, and he lived to 26, which is a grand old age.”
Flagship Uberalles was the winner of 14 of his 40 races, including seven Grade 1s, and more than £625,000 in total prize-money.

Punter Top Picks

Great minds think alike - or lesser ones seldom differ?

Whichever way round it is, when we submit our strings there's a degree of crossover. But which horses picked up most selections ahead of our competitions, and how did they get on?

(All wins and points are from the Punter seasons only.)

2025/26 The New Lion (6/7)
Only Peej turned down the opportunity to select Dan Skelton's Turner's Novice Hurdle winner, it only cost him 23.25 points. It was inauspicious start as The New Lion fell two out in the Fighting Fifth. Compensation awaited at Cheltenham in January in the Unibet Hurdle, Harry Skelton piloting the 9/4 winner in the race that may be best-remembered as the last of the talented Sir Gino. That was the only win for our top pick as that race was followed by a third place in the Champion Hurdle behind Lossiemouth and Brighterdaysahead and a second behind Gordon Elliott's mare in the Aintree Hurdle.

2025 Desert Flower, Field of Gold, The Lion In Winter (4/7)
Desert Flower took the 1000 Guineas (and 52 points) then finished third in the Oaks and wasn't seen again. The Lion in Winter only managed 16.3 points, for second in the QEII Stakes at Ascot. Field of Gold did the best of the three with a haul of 91.93. That was made up of a second in the 2000 Guineas plus wins in the Irish equivalent and the St James's Palace Stakes.

2024/25 Caldwell Potter (4/7)
A record low number of picks for a top pick, for a record-priced horse that has yet to appear in the competition. Caldwell Potter started with a facile win in a Carlisle Novice Chase for 11.19 points. The jury was very much out after defeats at Cheltenham and Windsor but front-running tactics saw a fantastic flag to tape win at the Festival under Harry Cobden in the Golden Miller Limited Handicap Chase and score 18.1 points. Then it was on to Aintree for the Mildmay and the same pilot and same tactics saw the horse tough it out for another win and 28.75 points.

2024 City of Troy (7/7)
It's been four years since an 'all' pick but City of Troy flopped in the 2,000 Guineas. There were questions to be asked ahead of the Derby but the horse was mightily impressive in a comfortable two and three quarter length win and 54 points for us. It was more workmanlike at Sandown in July for the Eclipse but the horse did enough under Ryan Moore to give us all 51.25 points. At the Juddmonte in August there was another win under Moore, by a length from Calandagan, for another 52.25 points.

2023/24 El Fabiolo (6/7)
Martin was the one who passed on the horse that headed into the season as Champion Chase favourite. There was an early 21.1 points from victory in the Grade Two Hilly Way in December and that was followed by 26.2 for the Grave One Dublin Chase at Leopardstown in February. But wehn it came to the spring festivals the Mullins star was found wanting. Pulled up in the Champion Chase then beaten in the Celebration Chase. Unlikely that it will have six picks next season.

2023 Auguste Rodin (6/7)
Peej the only Punter to turn down 159.8 points from the Aidan O'Brien star. It wasn't a perfect season by any means. The horse flopped in the 2,000 Guineas but bounced back to win the Derby and Irish Derby. There was another failure when dead last in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes but the season finished on a high with a narrow win in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

2022/23 Constitution Hill (6/7)
Some of the easiest points we'll ever win. Nicky Henderson's stable star dominated the 2m-2m4f hurdling division with easy wins in the Fighting Fifth, Christmas Hurdle, the Champion Hurdle (against Ireland's best in State Man) and then in the Aintree Hurdle. All ridden by Nico De Boinville, all at various shades of long odds-on and all earning 51 points or thereabouts for the Punters.

2022 Inspiral (5/7)
The leading two-year-old filly in 2021 Inspiral was an obvious pick for some but was ruled out of the first big target, the 1000 Guineas. John and Thady Gosden had the horse ready for the Coronation Stakes at Ascot in June and it was an impressive win for 55.76 points under Frankie Dettori. The Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket the following was one of the season's big shocks. Inspiral, at 1/7, was beaten into second place after what many thought was a poor Frankie ride. Inspiral returned to winning ways at Deauville in August (30.6 points) but flopped on Champions Day at Ascot, fluffing the start and eventually finishing sixth in the Mile.

2021/22 Envoi Allen, Shishkin (5/7)
After a comfortable win before the competition started Envoi Allen was favourite for the John Durkan at Punchestown but was a well beaten sixth behind Allaho. An easy odds-on win in a three-runner race at Leopardstown scored 26.2 points. A further defeat followed at Cheltenham following wind surgery and it's unlikely the horse will get five picks again.
Shishkin started in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton and scored a 10-length win over Greaneteen and 42.9 points. Shishkin then took the Clarence House and a further 78.68 points after a great battle with Energumene. The horse flopped in the Champion Chase though with the performance first being blamed on the ground and then on a 'rare bone condition'.

2021 Love (6/8)
Love delivered in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Ascot on her season opener to earn us 51.8 points but that was it for the season. Third in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes and the Juddmonte before a second in the Blandford Stakes at the Curragh.

2020/21 Envoi Allen (7/8)
The season started with a facile win in a four-runner novice chase at Fairyhouse that earned 26.1 points. There was another easy win in a Grade 3 at Punchestown in January for another 16.3 points but that was it. Favourite for the Marsh Novices Chase at Cheltenham, Envoi Allen fell at the fourth.

2020 - Pinatubo (8/8)
The first flat 'all pick for six years didn't dominate as we hoped. Starting with a third in the 2,000 Guineas, there was a second place in the St. James' Palace Stakes two weeks later. The one win of the season came at Deauville in the Prix Jean Prat before finishing with a second place in the Prix de Moulin in September. All in all, just 40.45 points were accrued.

2019/20 - Envoi Allen, Klassical Dream, Paisley Park (6/8)
Envoi Allen won at Fairyhouse and Naas before taking the Ballymore Novices Chase at the Festival for a 79.1 point total.
Klassical Dream had two disappointing runs before the turn of the year before being ruled out with a leg infection.
Paisley Park won the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury and Cleeve at Cheltenham for 47.9 points before a disappointing run in the Stayers' and the discovery of an irregular heartbeat.

2019 - Enable (6/8)
Returned in July, winning the Eclipse, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks before being beaten into second in the Arc for a total of 141 points.

2018/19 - Altior (8/8)
Five more wins for the Nicky Henderson stable star and 206.2 points for us all. Those wins were in the Tingle Creek, Desert Orchid, Clarence House, Champion Chase and Celebration Chase

2018 - Saxon Warrior (7/8)
Started with victory in the 2000 Guineas for 54 points but didn't win after that with two seconds, a third and two fourths behind the likes of Masar and Roaring Lion.

2017/18 - Altior (7/8)
Had a late start to the season after wind surgery but didn't miss a beat when back on track winning the Game Spirit, Champion Chase and Celebration Chase for 119.2 points.

2017 - Coronet, Order of St George (6/9)
Coronet had a season of chasing home the likes of Enable, Capri and Hydrangea so had just the one win, in the Group 2 Ribblesdale at Ascot, for 30.4 points.
Order of St George notched four wins and 77.9 points. Biggest wins were the Irish St Leger and British Champions Long Distance Cup.

2016/17 - Altior, Douvan, Thistlecrack (9/10)
Altior was coming off the back of a flawless novice hurdle season and was just as effective over the bigger obstacles, no opponent finishing closer than six lengths down. Six wins, including the Arkle and Celebration Chase, netted 147 points.
Douvan breezed through three prep races for 63.3 points but disappointed in the Champion Chase at 2/9F coming home lame.
Thistlecrack won Novice Chases at Cheltenham and Newbury then stepped up to take the King George earning 82.2 points. Picked up an injury in the Cotswold Chase and didn't win after that.

2016 - Air Force Blue, Midterm, Minding, Royal Artillery (6/9)
Air Force Blue was odds on favourite for the 2000 Guineas but finished 12th out of 13. Had three more races for a best-placed seventh.
Midterm also drew a blank in three outings.
Minding won five races, got 237.7 points and was our 2016 Horse of the Season.
Royal Artillery won just once in four races, a Group 3 at Haydock worth 26.3

2015/16 - Douvan, Faugheen (8/9)
Douvan bossed the 2m novice chase division winning at Navan and Leopardstown early in the season before claiming the big prizes at Leopardstown, Cheltenham and Aintree for 144.2 points
Faugheen suffered a surprise defeat in the Morgiana Hurdle but bounced back to take 77.2 points for the Christmas Hurdle and Irish Champion before a ligament injury finished the season early,

2015 - Found (7/9)
Five second places but just one win, a Group Three at the Curragh, for 16.6 points.

2014/15 - Annie Power, Faugheen, More of That, Simonsig (7/9)
Annie Power re-appeared in the Mares Hurdle at the Festival but capsized at the last. She did win the Mares' Champion Hurdle at Punchestown for 26.1 points.
Faugheen picked up 130.4 points on the season for four wins. They came at Ascot, Kempton and both the Cheltenham and Punchestown Champion Hurdles.
Simonsig missed the season with injury.

2014 - Kingman (9/9)
Beaten in the 2000 Guineas but won the Irish version, the St James Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Prix Jacques Le Marois earning 130.2 points (and Champion 3 year-old honours.)

2013/14 - Bobs Worth, Sprinter Sacre, The New One (8/8)
Bobs Worth's only win this season was in the Lexus for 28.4 points.
Sprinter Sacre flooped in the Desert Orchid Chase and was found to have an irregular heartbeat that ended his season.
The New One won the International Hurdle and the Aintree Hurdle for 53. points but was beaten at Kempton and in the Champion Hurdle.

2013 - Toronado (7/8)
Just the one win, in the Sussex Stakes, as Dawn Approach mopped up the big races.

2012/13 - Big Buck's and Sprinter Sacre (both 9/9)
Big Buck's won his season opener at Newbury as the 1/12F but picked up a season-ending injury.
Sprinter Sacre ruled the 2m division picking up 105.1 points winning the Tingle Creek, Victor Chandler, Champion Chase and then took the 2m 4f Melling Chase.

--

2011 - Frankel (9/9)
Dominant. Won all four races that season, the 2000 Guineas, the St James Palace Stakes,  Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

2009/10 - Big Buck's (9/9)
Completely ruled the division, winning four out of four including the Long Walk, World Hurdle and Liverpool Hurdle.

2008 - New Approach (8/10)
Edged out in the British and Irish 2000 Guineas by Henrythenavigator, gained compensation in the Derby and also too the Champions Stakes on both sides of the Irish Sea.

2007/8 - Kauto Star (9/10)
Edged out Exotic Dancer in the Betfair Chase then ran away with the King George and Ascot Chase before finishing seven lengths second in the Gold Cup behind the mighty Denman and being beaten by Our Vic in the Aintree Bowl (by a nose.)

2004 - American Post, Yeats (7/10)
American Post won the French 2000 Guineas as 11/4 on favourite but failed to make the frame on two further outings.
Yeats won the Leopardstown Derby Trial at long odds on but met with a setback a few days before the showpiece at Epsom and didn't reappear until the following May,

2003 - Hawk Wing (9/10)
Coasted to victory in the Lockinge on reappearance but finished lame in only subsequent race (the Queen Anne at Ascot) and was retired to stud.

2002/3 -Moscow Flyer (9/10)
Having taken last season's Arkle, Moscow Flyer was an obvious pick for honours. After unseating Barry Geraghty in the Tingle Creek it was wins all the way - at Leopardstown, Punchestown and in the Champion Chase.

2002 - Hawk Wing (10/10)
Second four times, including the 2000 Guineas and Derby, and only win was in the Eclipse.

2001/02 - Best Mate (9/10)
Started with second places at Ascot and Kempton behind Wahiba Sands and Florida Pearl respectively but ended the season with a first Gold Cup victory.

2001 - Golan (8/10)
Won the 2000 Guineas at 11/1 on reappearance but was denied by Galileo in the Derby and that horse and Morshdi in the Irish version. Took the Prix Niel in September en route to fourth place in the Arc.

2000/01 - Looks Like Trouble (8/10)
Just the one run this season (which was curtailed by foot and mouth), victory at Down Royal in the James Nicholson Wine Merchant Champion Chase by 15 lengths from Doran's Pride.

2000 - Dubai Millennium (6/10)
Ran just the once - sluicing up in the Prince of Wales Stakes.

The 100-Point Heroes

The scoring system has changed a few times so whether this will get rarer is a moot point but for now, here's a list of all the horses that brought in a three-figure score in a single race since 16 November 2012. (Punter's name in brackets.)

The top five

153.8 - Very Wood
153.2 - Decorated Knight
151.8 - Arctic Fire
148.6 - Golden Ace, Lord Windermere

11 March 2025 Cheltenham, Champion Hurdle (Cliff) 148.6
What a race! Golden Ace had been switched from the Mares' Hurdle to try to pick up some place money and ended up scooping the big prize after previous champions Constitution Hill and State Man crashed out at different points in the race. Lorcan Williams guided the mare home to a nine-length win at 25/1 (£36.80 on the Tote) and a huge points haul for Cliff.

4 May 2024 Newmarket, 2000 Guineas, Notable Speech (Bob) 109.0
Only four of the 11 runners went off at longer odds than the Godolphin-owned chestnut with three all-weather wins at Kempton appearing to be undervalued by all but Bob! William Buick piloted the Charlie Appleby-trained, unbeaten horse to a length and a half victory with a further length and three quarters back to third.

4 May 2024 Churchill Downs, Kentucky Derby, Mystik Dan (Cod) 128.44
Cod often looks to America for an occasional winner and he often looks to horses with 'Dan' in their name. This time the combination paid dividends. In a big way. Beaten into third in the Arkansas Derby at the end of March Mystik Dan was sent off at 186/10. The horse just got home by a nose in a three-way photo under Brian Joseph Hernandez Jr.

26 December 2023 Kempton, King George VI Chase, Hewick (Cod) 103.4
A retained single pick for Cod that finished last season with a good win in the Oaksey Chase at Sandown, following up a win in the Bet365 Chase the year before. Shark Hanlon's horse also tried to retain the Galway Plate in August but dropped away tamely to finish 14th. The eight-year-old was aimed at the Bocing Day showpiece with hope rather than expectation and went off at 12/1 with a new jockey in the shape of Gavin Sheehan on board. Ridden along from early on (Sheehan might have pulled the horse up on another day) he still had plenty to do three out. Hewick stayed on and finished best of all, taking the lead in the last 100 yds to finish a length and a half ahead of Bravemansgame.

9 December 2023 Sandown, Henry VIII Novices Chase, Le Patron (Cliff) 109.0
A single pick for the Editor which didn't feature in the Punter Profiles section of the handbook so we don't know what the Ed had spotted in a horse last seen being beaten into 11th in a handicap hurdle at Exeter in April. Gary Moore's five-year-old came into the race off the back of two comfortable small-field wins in handicap chases and was the 16/1 outsider of six. David Noonan was in the saddle and after a couple of earlier 'not fluent' efforts got Le Patron jumping well and the horse kept on to deny 2/1 favourite Colonel Harry by a length and a quarter.

4 December 2021 Sandown, Tingle Creek Chase - Greaneteen (Cliff) 101.0
While Greaneteen had ten straight finishes in the top four the odds of 12/1 show this was a bit of a surprise. Second to Politilogue in this race last year was perhaps one piece of form to take notice of but a win in the Celebration Chase at Sandown in April with Champion chaser Put The Kettle On 20 lengths back was perhaps the best clue as to why the Ed picked this Nicholls two-miler. A disappointing seasonal reappearance in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter was put to bed here in emphatic form. After a careful start Bryony Frost put Greaneteen in the mix three out then took over and eventually won going away from stablemate Hitman.

6 February 2021 Sandown, Scilly Isles Novices Chase - Sporting John (Cliff) 105.6
Sporting John had been a decent novice hurdler racking up three straight wins in the 2019/20 season before finishing distressed in seventh-placed finish in 2020's Ballymore at the Festival, well behind winner Envoi Allen. Sent novice chasing this season Sporting John reappeared at Exeter but faded badly in the end, beaten 33 lengths plus by Fiddlerontheroof. Philip Hobbs' six-year-old returned for this race with Richard Johnson on board and 14/1 fifth favourite of seven runners. Held up at the back until three out the horse  kept on strongly to win going away (the trainer's representative could offer no explanation for the apparent improvement in form.)

6 October 2019 Longchamp, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe - Waldgeist (Cod) 103.2
After drawing a blank at three it seemed the older Waldgeist got, the better he got. There were four wins as a four year-old including the Group One Grand Prix de St-Cloud before a fourth place in that year's Arc. Andre Fabre started the horse's five year old campaign with an April victory over Study of Man who'd won the previous year's French Derby. Summer trips to Britain saw defeats to Crystal Ocean and Enable but he had a successful Arc prep on home turf three weeks before the big race. He went off at 131/10 under Pierre-Charles Boudot and was brought late down the outside to catch favourite Enable in the last 50 yards and win by a length and three quarters. In the World's Best Racehorse Rankings of 2019 Waldgeist was rated equal first with Enable and Crystal Ocean. He now stands at Ballylinch Stud at a fee of €17,500.

20 October 2018 Ascot, British Champions Sprint Stakes - Sands of Mali (Cliff) 117.2
Sands of Mali had three wins in the summer as a two year old but flopped in the end of season races at Newmarket and in the Breeders' Cup. Spring 2018 started better with wins at Chantilly and Haydock but for more defeats saw Richard Fahey's horse head into this as a 28/1 longshot. Paul Hanagan made all on the horse and comfortably repelled a challenge from Harry Angel to win by a length. Only finished in the frame once in four runs in 2019.

16 March 2018 Cheltenham, County Handicap Hurdle - Mohaayed (Steve) 127.8
Twice a winner on the flat for Kevin Prendergast, Mohaayed was in his second season with Dan Skelton. Mohaayed had been place twice that winter but hadn't won since  a summer match race at Market Rasen at 1/33. Skelton was sweet on the horse for the County Hurdle but rain that week meant he nearly withdrew him. An unfancied 33/1 shot (£63.90 on the Tote!) Bridget Andrews took it up at the last and ran on strongly to win comfortably from 50/1 shot Remiluc. Only top three finish since was a win at Ascot in the Betfair Exchange Trophy in November 2018 but was fancied to go close in the 2020 County Hurdle but finished 10th.

15 March 2018 Cheltenham, Stayers' Hurdle - Penhill (Tony) 102.6
A decent but not spectacular performer on the level for James Bethell and Luca Cumani, Penhill was switched to Willie Mullins for a hurdles campaign. That first year over obstacles saw six wins including the Albert Bartlett at the Festival. Penhill had been off for nearly a year after being beaten at Punchestown so was 12/1 fifth favourite. There were no fitness or stamina problems on show as Paul Townend led between the last two hurdles and won going away from Supasundae. Penhill hasn't won since and pulled up lame in the 2020 edition of the Stayers'.

21 October 2017 Ascot, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes - Persuasive (Steve) 117.2
This filly had won five out of five in her two and three year-old seasons until a Group One defeat at Leopardstown. The four year-old campaign had been winless though so was an 8/1 chance for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori. Held up at the rear, Frankie made his move three out, led with a furlong to go and soon took command for a length win over favourite Ribchester in what was to be her last race.

16 September 2017 Doncaster, St Leger Stakes - Capri (Neil) 107.8
Kept back following the Irish Derby win (see below) Capri was 3/1 favourite for the race. Ryan Moore took the ride this time and used every ounce's of the horse's stamina to hold off the challenge of Crystal Ocean by half a length with Stradivarius a short head in third. Capri took part in plenty of top races over the next two years but only won once more - The Alleged Stakes at Naas in 2018.

9 September 2017 Leopardstown, Irish Champion Stakes - Decorated Knight (Peej) 153.2
After being off since the previous July Decorated Knight started his 2017 campaign with a win at Lingfield in the Winter Derby Trial. From there to Meydan and a Group One win and defeat over three weeks and on to the Curragh to take the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Summer in the UK brought three defeats so Roger Charlton's horse was sent off at 25/1 at Leopardstown. In last place two furlongs out Andrea Atzeni delivered the horse in the final 100 yards to defeat Poet's Word by half a length. Defeat in the Breeders' Cup and retirement followed and he now stands for €9,000.

1 July 2017 The Curragh, Irish Derby - Capri (Neil) 113.2
Had a solid two year-old campaign but had yet to win at three when taking the start here. Capri was Aiden O'Brien's second string at 6/1 with Derby hero Wings of Eagles the pick of Ryan Moore at 2/1. Seamie Heffernan picked up the ride on Capri and took it up two out. Horse and jockey had just enough to see off Cracksman by a neck and Wings of Eagles a short head further back.

24 June 2017 Ascot, Diamond Jubilee Stakes - The Tin Man (Peej) 110.4
Won the Champions Sprint at Ascot in 2016 but surprisingly was a single pick this year. Opened the season with a fifth place at York behind Tasleet but got the better of that opponent this time. Tom Queally didn't get the clearest of runs but when he got some daylight two out he ran on strongly to defy Tasleet by a neck. Has been a standing dish in the top sprints since with the 32Red Sprint Cup at Haydock in 2018 the biggest win since.

17 March 2017 Cheltenham, County Handicap Hurdle - Arctic Fire (Tony) 151.8
Another very decent hurdler who had the bad luck to be around at the same time as the likes of Faugheen, Hurricane Fly and Jezki, Arctic Fire had been off the course for more than a year when lining up for the County Hurdle. Giving six pounds and more to the field 20/1 seemed like a fair price. Paul Townend took the ride and brought Arctic Fire wide and over to the stands' side turning in getting in front of 50/1 outsider Ozzie The Oscar in the final 75 yards and denying L'Ami Serge by a neck. Switched stables to Denis Cullen that summer and won two more minor races.

16 March 2017 Cheltenham, Stayers' Hurdle - Nichols Canyon (Tony) 121.6
A three-time winner on the flat for John Gosden, Nichols Canyon switched to Willie Mullins to take up a hurdling career. Nichols Canyon had an excellent novice campaign culminating in a Punchestown Champion Novice Hurdle win. Another decent season followed, Annie Power taking the big prizes, but there had only been one, unsuccessful, attempt at three miles before taking on the Stayers at the Festival. It proved a great decision as Ruby Walsh had plenty of horse to stay on and win by three quarters of a length from Lil Rockefeller. Sadly was fatally injured in the 2017 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown.

11 February 2017 Newbury, Betfair Hurdle - Ballyandy (Lee) 107.6
The winner of four bumpers, including the Champion Bumper at last year's festival, Ballyandy had yet to break his duck over obstacles. Despite that, the horse was made 3/1 favourite for Nigel Twiston-Davies and son Sam on board. Always in touch, Ballyandy came through to take it up at the last and was driven out to a three-quarter length win over Movewiththetimes. There have been three wins since and an eighth place in the 2020 Champion Hurdle.

29 January 2017 Leopardstown, Irish Champion Hurdle - Petit Mouchoir (Neil) 103.8
As one of Altior's 2016 Supreme Hurdle generation it was always going to be difficult to find winning opportunities. Petit Mouchoir had a gone a year without a first place before winning the Ryan Hurdle at Christmas and was made favourite for this four-runner renewal. Sent off at 9/10F,  David Mullins has seen off Nichols Canyon before that rival fell at the last and held on by a length from Footpad. Surprisingly has only one won race since but is still picking up the place money in 2020.

26 November 2016 Newbury,  Hennessey Gold Cup - Native River (Micky) 109.2
Already a consistent jumper, Native River stepped up to the top rank with this win at Newbury. Colin Tizzard's chaser was the 7/2 favourite and Richard Johnson earned his riding fee in holding off 25/1 shot Carole's Destrier by half a length. Native River followed up in the Welsh National the following month and the Denman Chase in February before a third in that year's Gold Cup. Won that race in 2018 after a tremendous duel with Might Bite and was fancied for the race again in 2020 before injury curtailed those plans.

2 October 2016 Chantilly, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe - Found (Bob) 121.2
Incredibly consistent mare who only finished out of the first three once in a 21 race career, in the previous year's Arc. Found came into the race off the back of five straight second places and was a 6/1 chance for Aiden O'Brien and Ryan Moore. In midfield for much of the race Moore made his move two and a half furlongs out and ran on well to beat Highland Reel by a length and three quarters. Found's career finished after a second at Ascot and a third place in the Breeders Cup Turf behind Highland Reel and Flintshire after stumbling leaving the stalls..

18 Jun 2016 Ascot, Diamond Jubilee Stakes - Twilight Son (Bob) 109.0
Despite winning four of five races in his two and three-year-old careers Twilight Son was a single pick for Bob. The season started with a staying on fifth at York for Henry Candy's sprinter but he'd shown enough to go off 7/2 third favourite Ascot. 25/1 shot Signs of Blessing blazed a trail but Ryan Moore times his run on Twilight Son to perfection, getting up in the last 50 yards. The horse finished down the field on two further runs before retirement, we'll see his first crop of two year-olds in 2020.

26 Dec 2015 Kempton, King George VI Chase - Cue Card (Neil) 109.2
Surprisingly, this legend  had gone nearly two years without winning before taking the Charlie Hall and Betfair Chases in the autumn of 2015. Silviniaco Conti was behind Cue Card at Haydock after winning the previous two King Georges so Colin Tizzard's star lined up for the Boxing Day showpiece at 9/2, half the price of that rival. Favourite Don Cossack fell two from home leaving Cue Card and Vautour to battle it out. And what a battle! Cue Card getting up to win by a head at the line. The Betfred Bowl was another notable success that season and Cue Card also delivered another Betfair Chase and an Ascot Chase the following year before retirement came after the 2018 festival

28 Nov 2015 Newbury, Hennessey Gold Cup - Smad Place (Neil) 124.0
The stunning-looking grey was unlucky to be around at the same time as some other great chasers but still picked up over £250k in prize money. This was the biggest pay day. Carrying 11st 4lb Smad was sent off 7/1 second favourite and turned the race into a procession. Wayne Hutchinson went on three out and stayed on to secure a 12-length win from Theatre Guide. Smad PLace took a Cotswold Chase and Old Roan Chase over the rest of his fine career before a deserved retirement in 2018.

21 Aug 2015 York, Nunthorpe Stakes - Mecca's Angel (Neil) 116.2
Michael Dods' four year-old had won a Group 3 and finished second in a Group 2 this season before lining up in the Nunthorpe. Sent off 15/2 third favourite she got up in the final 50 yards to get the better of favourite Acapulco by two lengths who, as a two year-old, was getting a stone and 10lbs weight advantage! Mecca's Angel repeated the feat in the Nunthorpe in 2016,coming home in front of the reliable Limato.

25 Jul 2015 Ascot, King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes - Postponed (Peej) 117.0
Following three beaten runs with Adam Kirby on board, Postponed was reunited with Andrea Atzeni who'd ridden the horse to wins in 2014. The move paid dividends for Luca Cumani as Postponed got up in the last stride, by a nose, at 6/1 from Eagle Top. Postponed won at Longchamp and was expected to have a tilt at the Arc but was removed from Cumani's stable after the trainer and owner (Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum) fell out. Postponed won four times for Roger Varian the following season but could only finish fifth in the 2016 Arc.

11 Jul 2015 Newmarket, July Cup - Muhaarar (Peej) 105.6
Charlie Hills star sprinter had won the Greenham, flopped in the French 2,000 Guineas and bounced back with a Commonwealth Cup win before being sent off 2/1 favourite at Newmarket. Paul Hanagan got Muhaarar up in the shadow of the post to beat Tropics by a nose. Muhaarar won at Deauville and the Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot before the season ended and now stands at Nunnery stud at a fee of £20,000.

27 Jun 2015 The Curragh, Irish Derby - Jack Hobbs (Bob) 104.0
After being beaten into second in the Dante and then the Derby (both times by Golden Horn), Jack Hobbs picked up a pretty decent consolation prize at the Curragh. The 10/11F won comfortably for William Buick with five lengths to spare over Storm The Stars and anther five plus back to the rest. Won the September Stakes at Kempton the same year but the only other career win came at Meydan in the 2017 Dubai Sheema Classic.

11 Mar 2015 Cheltenham, RSA Chase - Don Poli (Lee) 104.6
Don Poli was sent off 13/8 favourite in an eight-runner RSA chase and stayed on strongly under Bryan Cooper to beat Southfield Theatre by six lengths. Won two races the following season (including the Lexus Chase) but only finished third behind Don Cossack in the Gold Cup. Switched from Willie Mullins to Gordon Elliott in 2016 but has only got his head in front in two point-to-points after switching to Philip Kirby. Last seen in the Cheltenham Foxhunters trailling in 11th, 45 lengths behind the winner.

18 Oct 2014 Ascot, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes - Charm Spirit (Tony) 111.4
Charm Spirit had already won three top mile races in France this year before coming back to Britain. Night of Thunder had beaten Charm Spirit into fifth in May's 2000 Guineas but Freddy Head's horse turned the tables here. Olivier Peslier squeezed through a gap a furlong out and drove the horse out to win by half a length. It was straight to the breeding shed after this race for Charm Spirit.

20 Sep 2014 Leopardstown, Irish Champion Stakes - The Grey Gatsby 113.6* (Neil/Peej)
(*possibly mis-scored - might have incorrectly got single pick points.)
Australia was sent off the 30/100F for this edition of the race but went down to the grey by a neck. Joseph O'Brien put up a pound overweight and then took Australia round the wide outside. Ryan Moore rode a much better race, following the favourite until getting up in the closing strides at 7/1. The grey ran 17 more times without success.

6 Sep 2014 Haydock, Sprint Cup - G Force (Bob) 125.6
With Slade Power (see below) skipping the race for a tilt at the Darley Classic stablemate Sole Power was sent of favourite for this. It was G Force and the evergreen gordon Lord Byron that were locked together in the last 50 yards with David O'Meara's sprinter getting up by a three quarters of a length at 11/1. Posted just one more win (at Naas in 2018) before retirement.

12 July 2014 Newmarket, July Cup - Slade Power (Lee) 105.0
Following up last month's win (see below) the 7/4F had a length and a half to spare over 66/1 shot Tropics at the line. This was Slade Power's last British run but the European Champion sprinter went to Australia for the Darley Classic at Flemington, running no sort of race and finishing 11th.

21 Jun 2014 Ascot, Diamond Jubilee Stakes - Slade Power (Lee) 108.4
The five year-old gave 5lbs and a one and half length beating to Aiden O'Brien's Due Diligence. Sent off the 7/2F, Wayne Lordon was on board for Edward Lynam.

20 Jun 2014 Ascot, Coronation Stakes - Rizeena (Lee) 114.2
Ryan Moore guided the 11/2 chance to a three-quarter length victory ahead of Lesstalk in Paris. Favourite Lightning Thunder was further three lengths back in ninth. This was Rizeena's last win.

14 Mar 2014 Cheltenham, Gold Cup - Lord Windermere (Neil) 146.8
A 20/1 shock winner of the big one in a desperately tight finish (a short head from On His Own with The Giant Bolster less than a length behind in third). Had won the RSA a year before but had not been in the first five in three runs since. Never won again and only finished in the first three three times in 12 attempts.

13 Mar 2014 Cheltenham, Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle - Very Wood (Bob) 153.8
A massive 33/1 upset running out a four and a half length winner over Deputy Dan. Only won one more race but was disqualified from another after a banned substance was found in a sample. Last run was in the four-miler a year after this win.

12 Mar 2014 Cheltenham, RSA Chase - O'Faolains Boy (Peej) 126.6
A 12/1 chance for Barry Geraghty and Rebecca Curtis managed to hold off Smad Place in a last half a furlong duel. Won only  once more and finished seventh in Don Cossack's Gold Cup.

19 Oct 2013 Ascot, Champion Stakes - Farhh (Martin) 108.8
The 11/4 shot wins his last race before retirement under Silvestre de Sousa, just getting the better of favourite Cirrus Des Aigles by a neck. Now stands for £12,000 at Dalham Hall Stud.

7 Sep 2013 Leopardstown, Irish Champion Stakes  - The Fugue (Steve) 114.8
William Buick made the most of the 3lb pull at the weights to beat odds-on Al Kazeem by a length and a quarter at 4/1. Only raced five more times but did win the Prince of Wales Stakes in 2014.

He gets 11.1 points.

At Cheltenham in the 2m4f handicap chase, Frodon ( Cod) took his chance, In touch, led 3rd to 5th, tracked winner, driven after 3 out, 4 lengths down last, ridden and kept on flat, always just held, 2nd beaten 2l. He gets 12 points.

In the 2m mares listed bumper, The Glancing Queen ( Bob) took her chance, Held up towards rear, steady headway towards outside over 5f out, chasing leaders before the straight, ridden in centre over 1f out, led towards finish, won going away by 1 ¼ l. She gets 54 points.

At Cheltenham on Sunday in the 2m grade 2 chase, Sceau Royal (Cliff, Steve) went to post, Tracked leaders, went 2nd and poised to challenge after 3 out, upsides next, led narrowly last, soon ridden, all out to assert towards finish, wining by 2 1/4l. He gets 27 points.

At Punchestown in the 2m bumper, Malone Road ( Cod), took his chance, Led and disputed early until headed after 2f, settled behind leaders in 3rd after 3f, going well in 2nd 3f out and improved to lead going best 2f out, pushed clear over 1f out and soon in command, eased inside final furlong, winning easily 8 ½ l. He gets 23.4 points.

Connections of Kemboy are not fazed by picking up a penalty for the Ladbrokes Trophy after his win at Clonmel.
Last-minute Unibet Morgiana Hurdle absentee Samcro is likely to run next in Newcastle's Fighting Fifth - when he may clash with dual champion Buveur D'Air at the start of next month.
Bristol De Mai will seemingly run in the Betfair Chase at Haydock next Saturday whether the ground is soft or not. Nigel Twiston – Davies told the punter He said: "He will run in the Betfair. As long as there is decent ground at Haydock, he will be there. He has been really good at home.

The Betfair chase looks to be a cracker on Saturday as Bristol De Mai, Might Bite, Clan Des Obeaux , Native River and Thistlecrack all stand their ground.

Monet's Garden

Nicky Richards hailed Monet's Garden as "everything you could want in a racehorse" following the death of the hugely-popular grey on Tuesday night, aged 20.
The Roselier gelding won 17 of his 32 starts under rules, including three victories in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree. He claimed the notable scalp of the great Kauto Star when securing the first of his Old Roan triumphs in 2007, and the race has been named in his honour since his retirement seven years ago.
Richards was in no doubt when asked where Monet's Garden ranked in the horses he has trained.
The Greystoke handler said: "He was very good at Aintree and beat Kauto Star there one day. He also won a couple of Ascot Chases, the Ascot Hurdle when it was run at Windsor and he also put that good French horse Mid Dancer in his place at Carlisle one day. He just had everything you could want in a racehorse. He could jump and gallop and was as game as a pebble. He'd have to be the best I've ever trained, for sure."
Tony Dobbin partnered Monet's Garden on each of the grey's 23 starts before he retired from the saddle in 2008.
He said: "He was an unbelievable horse to ride and before I retired I was the only one to have ridden him, which was pretty cool. I won the Ascot Chase on him and we had some great days at Aintree. I remember the day he beat Kauto Star well. Obviously we were getting a good bit of weight and it was Kauto Star's first run of the season.
"I set out to make the running and could hear Ruby (Walsh) coming up behind me turning into the straight and I was thinking 'here we go again', as I'd finished second to Kauto Star a lot. He couldn't get by Monet's Garden that day, though.
"He was definitely up there with the best jumpers I've ridden. He was so fast and slick and he was like that from day one. I remember watching him school over some tyres as a three-year-old in Greystoke and he was brilliant even then - he was exceptional. It's a sad day, but he had a great life and Joey looked after him brilliantly. I know she'll be gutted, as she absolutely loved him."

2018 Flat Issue 6 - Denman Tribute

Tribute to a Legend of these pages
Denman, the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, died on Tuesday at the age of 18, trainer Paul Nicholls announced.
Nicholls said the brilliant chaser "had begun to go downhill in the past few days", and was "put to sleep painlessly".
The Ditcheat handler said: "The decision was taken by his devoted owner Paul Barber with the full support of myself, our head lad Clifford Baker and our vet Buffy Shirley-Beavan.
"We all agreed it was the right thing to do because he had begun to go downhill in the past few days and we did not want to see him suffer."
Denman was renowned for his iron will on a racecourse and won 14 races from 24 starts.
His finest hour came in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup, when he defeated stablemate Kauto Star by seven lengths in a race for the ages.
Denman claimed four Grade One races and was also twice successful in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury in 2007 and 2009. He retired in 2011 and earned over £1million in prize-money.
Nicholls said on the Betfair website: "Denman was known affectionately to punters and racegoers as 'The Tank', which I always felt was a fitting description.
"He was a magic horse who had a tremendous following because of the wholehearted way he went about his racing.
"He was tough, hardy and willing, wasn't the easiest to train, and would bite your hand off in his box given half a chance.
"He came along at the right time and was one of our superstars during a golden era for Team Ditcheat."

Denman initially took up team chasing with Charlotte Alexander following his retirement. before returning to Ditcheat where he was cared for by owner Paul Barber's daughter-in-law Emma.
Nicholls described Barber as "immensely proud of Denman's achievements on the racecourse" and recounted how the gelding came to join his team.
He said: "I remember seeing Denman for the first time at Adrian Maguire's yard near Cork while Paul and I were on a shopping trip in Ireland. It was a few weeks after he had won his maiden point-to-point in March 2005. I was bowled over by Denman's presence and raw power as he was led into view.
"He had only taken a few steps when I told Adrian I'd have him. The words were hardly out of my mouth when Paul Barber countered, 'No you won't. I'm having him'. Neither of us had any cause to regret the deal that took Denman home to Ditcheat."

Denman was diagnosed with a fibrillating heart in the autumn following his Gold Cup win and Nicholls felt he lost a little of his brilliance after that problem.
He added: "Denman took a long time to recover his condition and full strength once back in training and in my view was never quite as good again.
"But he showed that he still retained his competitive edge and plenty of ability by winning a second Hennessy Gold Cup with an astonishing performance under top weight and also finishing runner up in three more Gold Cups.
"When he retired in 2011 he had earned in excess of £1million with 14 victories from 24 starts under rules, but mere statistics cannot possibly do him justice."

Dean Ivory hopes Librisa Breeze can give him another day to remember at Royal Ascot a week on Saturday in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
Ivory told the Punter r "We are going to the Diamond Jubilee and we will see where we go from there. It is not long until Ascot now and everything seems good at home. He is a very serious horse. Winning the Champions Sprint was one of best days I've ever had.
Charlie Appleby hopes to get a run into one-time Derby contender Ghaiyyath ahead of an outing in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes at York in August.
The Newmarket handler is weighing up two options for the three-year-old, who has not been sighted this season after sustaining an injury in the build-up to an intended outing in the Dante Stakes.
After tasting defeat on his debut at Doncaster the son of Dubawi subsequently posted two wins at over a mile at Newmarket, the latest in a Group Three contest in October.
Appleby told the punter: "He will be working back from the Great Voltigeur and we will try and get a run into him before that.
"He is back in work now. Ideally I would like to get one run in before the Voltigeur but that will be his main aim.
"Would we get him ready in time for the Bahrain Trophy or would we go to Goodwood for the Gordon Stakes? I'm not sure yet but those are the sort races we could look at before.
"Potentially he could be a St Leger horse along with the likes of Brundtland
Plans for Elarqam remain fluid following his disappointing effort in the Irish 2,000 Guineas a fortnight ago.
Mark Johnston's charge was a hot favourite for the Curragh Classic after his fourth placed finish in the Guineas at Newmarket, but the son of Frankel out of the brilliant mare Attraction finished a well-beaten sixth.
Subsequent tests have failed to reveal any significant abnormalities and connections are now in a quandary over whether to continue down the Group One path or lower his sights.

Taking centre stage at Royal Ascot is nothing new for Frankie Dettori and he has high hopes of continuing that trend by lighting up this year's meeting aboard Cracksman in the Prince of Wales's Stakes.
Speaking with Frankie this week he told me, He won the Champion Stakes at Ascot last year meeting the rising ground, and it is very exciting going back to there. If he goes there in his normal form, he is entitled to be favourite.
"He won the Champion Stakes over a mile and a quarter and he has won a Ganay on good ground, so I think the trip is fine. It is a stiff mile and a quarter at Ascot and that is pretty much what he wants.
"These races are never easy to win, but I'm going in there excited, so let's bring it on. I can't wait.
"It's a very exciting time."
David Simcock is looking at running Algometer in Saturday’s Sky Bet Grand Cup at York, with stablemate Curbyourenthusiasm also entered.
The five-year-old is expected to strip fitter for his reappearance at Goodwood where he finished sixth of seven in a ten-furlong Listed race.
Simcock said: “I’d like to think Algometer will definitely run "Algometer lacked sharpness, pace at Goodwood. Now he is another year older he is probably a touch slower. He will have been rusty – he’d been a long time off. And he had a health issue at the end of April which cost us a couple of weeks."
Charlie Hills and his team are working on a strategy to try to keep the lid on Battaash before the stalls open in next week's King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The four-year-old was an impressive four-length winner of the Prix de l'Abbaye at Chantilly at the end of last season and his clash with last year's King's Stand winner, the Wes Ward-trained Lady Aurelia, is set to be one of the highlights of the week.
Lady Aurelia finished in front of Battaash in the Nunthorpe at York last August, but Hills' speedster blew his chance by getting worked up before the race.
"We're trying to find the right strategy to put the saddle on and bring him out late - there are things we've thought through. We'll try to go down nice and quiet and go down last, like he did at Chantilly and Haydock," said Hills.

"He's had a few niggly problems with the stalls so Craig and Gary Witheford will be with him as well. He'll go in late with a blindfold, too."
