News
Rebecca Curtis is going for the Betfair Chase with Haiti Couleurs and expects Britain's newest – and hottest – Cheltenham Cup hope to be "bang on ready" for Saturday. She is committed to Haydock with the improving chaser, rather than waiting for the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury seven days later.

Nicky Henderson has every ounce of confidence that Constitution Hill is on the road to returning to his best after he sailed through his final racecourse gallop before his comeback run in Newcastle’s BetMGM Fighting Fifth on Saturday week. After the workout Constitution Hill retained his position as the 6-4 second favourite with William Hill for the Fighting Fifth on November 29, with the market headed by even money shot The New Lion, winner of the Turners Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last season.

On the prospect of meeting the Dan Skelton-trained six-year-old, Henderson said: "It’ll be tough. Dan’s horse is very good, and we know they’re all very fit horses right now. It’ll definitely test him in every single way, and there will be improvement, which will hopefully get him into Christmas. It wouldn’t be disappointing if he did finish second to The New Lion."

Ben Pauling believes Saturday's Betfair Chase offers last term's exciting novice Handstands his best chance of winning a Grade 1 this season. The Tim Radford-owned six-year-old, who won last season's Scilly Isles Novices' Chase, faces the biggest test of his career at Haydock, but Pauling is confident his first runner in the Betfair Chase can prove up to the task.

"I expect him to run very well," said Pauling. "I have more faith in this horse than you could ever imagine. The two times he's gone to festivals [Cheltenham and Aintree] he hasn't performed, but he's been wrong both times. I just think he's got a huge engine and we'll look back at that Scilly Isles like it was a very good race.  He's in really good form and I couldn't be happier with him. This is his best chance of a Grade 1 this season and we'll try to take it."

Dan Skelton is looking to continue his rampant form in the first British Grade 1 of the season with favourite Grey Dawning primed for Saturday's Betfair Chase (3.30), a race in which the trainer says last year's runner-up has "unfinished business". After a successful November meeting at Cheltenham when Skelton won the Paddy Power Gold Cup with Panic Attack and Shloer Chase with L'Eau Du Sud, as well as two other races across the three days, Skelton believes Grey Dawning is ready to fire on his comeback in Haydock's biggest jumps race.

Skelton, the early British trainers' championship leader, is seeing all the right signs in his big-race contender and hopes for less testing conditions this time. "I'm really happy," Skelton said. "The forecast looks a bit in and out for the week, which is fine, we just don't want it like it was at the 11th hour last year.   "We've got him really prepared for it. We've had an away day when he went with Panic Attack, and I couldn't have asked to have prepared better. I don't really have a negative about not having had a run with him. It certainly wasn't fitness that got him beat last year and he's every bit as fit now. He's at the peak of his life, in terms of age, so hopefully it's all enough."

Leading Champion Hurdle hope Anzadam has not been declared for the Unibet Morgiana Hurdle (2.10) at Punchestown on Saturday despite trading at a shade of odds-on before declaration stage on Thursday, with Lossiemouth heading a field of four. Trainer Willie Mullins had previously indicated that Anzadam would begin his campaign in the race, while Lossiemouth would attempt to defend her Hatton's Grace crown a week later. Lossiemouth will face just three rivals and heads the market with Paddy Power at odds of 4-9, while her closest market rival is stablemate Irancy, at 11-4

Top class novice hurdler, he made his debut at Fairyhouse in March last year, winning a 2m bumper by 13 l from Clap Of Thunder (received 7lb), then reappeared in December at Punchestown, winning a2m maiden hurdle by 2 ¾ l from Kawaboomga, then in February at Leopardstown, won the 2m grade 1 Ireland Novice hurdle by 13 l from Karniquet. In March at Cheltenham he won the 2m grade 1 Supreme novice hurdle by 1 ¾ l from William Munny, and finished at Punchestown in April, finishing 4th in the 2m grade 1 Champion novice hurdle, beaten 31 l behind Irancy.

Willie Mullins told The Punter: "He’s going novice chasing. He is every inch a chaser and I’m really looking forward to seeing him race over a fence. He’s a very keen horse and I think fences will help him settle. He could be careless at his hurdles last season, but he should respect fences more and I think he’ll be well suited by them. He looks one for the Arkle."

5 y bg  Blue Bresil – Samaraiya  (Cliff)

Perfectly named for the Editor’s string, I am hoping he will win a handicap  hurdle this season, although he probably won’t take top rank. He made his debut at Hereford in February this year, wining a 2m bumper by a short head from Ocean Waltz. He went off 8/11 fav that day so obviously had shown up well at home. At the end of March he was sent to Fairyhouse for a 2m sales bumper, finishing 4th, beaten 38 l behind Kopek Des Bordes, who is considered one of the Closutton’s better novices this season.

He reappeared at Chepstow in October and unseated at the 2nd in a 2m novice hurdle, but galloped round loose, jumping the rest well and finishing in front of the “winner”, so hopefully with a clear round he can win again. He reappeared a week later at Uttoxeter and made nearly all the running in a 2m novice hurdle, being caught on the run in by odds on Wade Out (gave 1lb), who was completing a hat trick.

He ran recently at Carlisle winning a 2m 1f maiden hurdle by 2 ¼ l from Jet o Vegas, and hopefully will progress from this. In December he was pulled up in a 2m handicap hurdle and was reported to be bleeding from his nose afterwards. He reappeared at Kelso in February this year winning a 2m novice hurdle by 11l from Blazer Two (received 12 lb), At Sandown in March he was 8th in a 2m handicap hurdle beaten 5l behind Go Dante (gave 6lb), and finished the season at Sandown in the 2m novice championship handicap hurdle final , finishing 7th beaten 10 ¾ l by Give It To Me OJ (GAVE 9LB). Jon Jo told the Punter that he feels he will improve again his season and should win a handicap at least.

In April at Ffos Las, he won a 2m bumper by 4 ¾ l from He Knows Better, then reappeared at Ffos Las in November last year, winning a 2m 4f maiden hurdle by 5l from Golden De Coer.

In December he followed up over course and distance in a similar event, beating House of Stories (received 7lb), 4 ¾ l then 2 weeks later a Newbury in the 2m 4f grade 1 Challow hurdle, finished 3rd beaten 1 ¾ l behind Captain Teague. In March this year at Cheltenham, he finished 2nd in the 3m grade 1 Albert Bartlett novice hurdle, beaten a head by Stellar Story, and finished the season at Aintree with 2nd in the 3m grade 1 Sefton novice hurdle, beaten 5 ½ l by Dancing City.

He reappeared at Newbury in November last year winning ta 2m 4f grade 2 novice chase by 2l from Masaccio, then followed up at Kempton in December, winning the 3m grade 1 Kauto Star novice chase by 2 ½ l from Hyland. He then sustained an injury in training and missed the rest of the season. Ben Pauling told the Punter: "he has summered well and is in good form. I am not convinced he needs 3 miles and an early season target could be the paddy Power Gold Cup, but he heeds another run over fences to qualify for that so alternatively he will go to Ascot for a grade 2 chase at Ascot a week later. The King George at Christmas will be next before we decide on either the Ryan Air or Gold Cup at Cheltenham."

Interesting pick, lightly raced 7 year old who made his debut at Bangor in November 2022, winning a 2m bumper by 4l from Blue Fin (gave 7lb), then followed up at Ffos las in January 2023, winning another 2m bumper by 4 ½ l from Norman Fletcher (received 16lb). He then won the 2m grade 1 Top novice hurdle at Aintree in April, beating Romeo Coolio 7l, and finished at Punchestown 3 weeks later, finishing 2nd to Irancy, beaten 9l in the 2m grade 1 Champion novice hurdle.

Willie Mullins told The Punter: "He’s a very strong-going horse. The Donnellys have State Man and Anzadam already, but I think this fella could be another one of Champion Hurdle quality if he was asked to do that. However, looking at how keen he is in his races, we’re going to go over fences with him and give him the chance to be an Arkle horse. He has huge ability, a lot more than he has shown on the track so far. If he settles better over fences, he’ll hopefully show on the track what he has shown us at home."

It would be hard to think that we might end up with a better mare than her. She races lazily enough and if she looked like she wanted further, the Ballymore would be there as an option too."
