Altior continues to
rule the roost at two miles and his 7l win in the Champion Chase last season
from Min was all the better as he had an interrupted season following a wind
operation. He will be a tough nut to crack, but one who could shake him up is
the exciting Footpad, and there first clash is eagerly awaited.
Footpad made his debut
at Auteuil in April 2015, a 1m 7f listed event for unraced horses and he
finished 7th 10l behind Mocalacto Has, then in May was 2nd
in a 2m conditions hurdle at the same track, beaten a short neck by Punch
Nantais.
He then moved
to Willie Mullins and won on his debut at Gowran Park, winning a 2m maiden
hurdle by 6 ½ l from Lagostovegas,
then was 3rd Leopardstown in December, in a grade 2 juvenile hurdle,
8 n1/4 l behind Apples Jade. He then won a 2m hurdle at Gowran Park by 12l from
Jazz Ranger and followed up at Leopardstown in February 2016, winning a grade 1
Juvenile hurdle by 2 ¾ l from stablemate Allblak Des Places. And was then 3rd
in the Triumph hurdle at Cheltenham , beaten 7 ¼ l by Ivanovich Gorbatov, then
fell at Aintree in the grade 1 4y juvenile hurdle. He is obviously tough as he
ten went to Auteuil twice, winning a
grade 3 hurdle over 2m 3f In May by a short neck from Device, then in
June a Grade 1 over course and distance, beating Kings Socks 2 ½ l. Perhaps that hard season tool it’s toll as he failed to
win in his next 5 starts, but ran respectably, finishing 2nd back at
Auteuil in November 2016, beaten a head by Capivari, then perhaps disappointed at Leopardstown in December when 4th
in the 2m grade 1 Ryan Air Hurdle, 10 l behind Petit Mouchoir. He was then 2nd
to Petit Mouchoir at Leoopradstown in the Irish Champion Hurdle, beaten 1l,
then was 4th at Cheltenham in the Champion hurdle, 10 ½ l behind
Buveur D’air, and 3rd at Punchestown in the 3m Champion Stayers
hurdle, 18 ¼ l behind Uknowhatinmeanharry. Sent over fences last season he won
a 2m 1f beginners chase at Navan by 11 l from Brelade, the grade 1 2m novice
chase at Leoparstown by 11l from Any Second Now, the grade 1 Arkle novice chase
over course and distance, beating Petit Mouchoiir 5l, the 2m Grade 1 Arlke
novice chase at the Cheltenham Festival by 14 l from Brain Power and the 2m
grade 1 Ryan Air novice chase at Punchestown by 12 from Optimus Prime. Made a
disappointing reapperance at Naas recently making mistakes before falling
