2024/25 Jumps Profile - Ballyburn

6 y bg Flemensfirth – Old Moon (Martin, Peej, Steve)

The big new hurdling star, it will be fascinating to see him and Constitution Hill clash his season. Ballyburn made his debut at Loughanmore in October 2022, winning a 3m 4y maiden point by 4 ½ l from Ossifer Hops, then after moving to Willie Mullins, made a winning rules debut at Punchestown in February last year, taking a 2m bumper by 2 ¼ l from Quantum Storm. In April at Punchestown, he won another 2m bumper by 6l from Dancing City. 

He reappeared at Fairyhouse in December, finishing 2nd in a 2m maiden hurdle, beaten 2 ½ l by Firefox, then 3 weeks later at Leopardstown won a 2m maiden hurdle by  25 l from Cleatus Poolawand followed up in February over Course and distance in the grade 1 novice hurdle beating Slade Steel 7l. He then came to Cheltenham in March and won the 2m 5f grade 1 Gallaghers novice hurdle by 13 l from Jimmy Du Seuil, and finished the season with victory at Punchestown in May, winning the 2m 4f grade 1 Champion novice hurdle by 3 ¼ l from Jeara (received 7 lb). 

He is due to go novice chasing and will be interesting to watch in what could be a strong division this season.

2024/25 Jumps Profile - Anno Power

Anno Power 5y bm Affinisea – Anno Whyte (Cliff)

Smart bumper mare who should do well over hurdles this season. She made her debut at Exeter in a 2m bumper in November 2023, finishing 2 ¼ l 2nd to Dunskay (received 7lb). In February this year she won a 2m mares bumper at Ascot, beating Nala The Lioness (received12 lb), by 2 ¾ l, and followed up at Cheltenham in April, winning  a 2m 1f mares bumper by 2 ¾ l from Plantoroma (received 12lb).  

Fry told The Punter She’s schooled well, will be Campaigned over 2 miles and will hopefully be contesting black type races later in the season.

2024/25 Jumps - What's in a name?

Salvator Mundi  (Latin for 'Savior of the World') is a painting attributed in whole or in part to the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, dated to c. 1499–1510. Long thought to be a copy of a lost original veiled with overpainting , it was rediscovered, restored, and included in an exhibition of Leonardo's work at the National Gallery, London, in 2011–2012.

Captain Teague: Pirate Lord of Madagascar, Keeper of the Pirata Codex for the Brethren Court and Jack Sparrow's father. The other pirate lords are visibly terrified of him. Keith Richards, who partially inspired Depp's portrayal of Sparrow, was first rumored to have a role as Sparrow's father in 2004     .

2024/25 Jumps - Editor's Introduction

Well we start the new season with an overhaul of jump racing, and also some significant and not all totally welcomed changes to the format of the Cheltenham festival in March. Personally I generally agree with the changes although the loss of the amateur riders chase is a big and sad loss in my opinion.    

 

In terms of the horses, the big question is again around Constitution Hill and whether he can return in top form. Nicky Henderson certainly thinks so, he has already been heavily backed for the Champion Hurdle, so his reappearance is eagerly awaited.  Two big names have departed the chasing field as Allaho has retired and Shishkin is sadly no longer with us.

On the Gold Cup front Galopin Des Champs has the rising star Fact To File to contend with, and their first meeting will be eagerly awaited.We have a European Derby winner in one string, certainly a first I think! and the best bred Juvenile hurdler around. Dan Skelton has shaken up the training ranks and has a very strong hand as the Nicholls/ Henderson domination wanes
