Useful sort who should continue to improve he made his debut at Kilfeacle, in a 3m maiden point in January 2017, finishing 6th, beaten 7 1/4l by On The Blind Side, then in February, won a similar event at Belharbour by 10 l from U No Like. Moving to Donald McCain, he won his reappearance at Bangor in December 2017, taking a 2m 3f novice hurdle by 7l from Thedellercheckout, then in January was 2nd over 2m 7f novice hurdle at Bangor, beaten 1 ½ l by Samuel Jackson. He was 2nd again at Haydock in February, in a 2m 7f grade 2 novice hurdle beaten 15 by Chef Des Obeaux, then at Ayr in March, won a 2m 4f novice hurdle by 18 l from Geronimo. He finished with 4th at Aintree in April in the 3m grade 1 Sefton Novice hurdle, beaten 10 ¼ l behind Santini, and that suggests he should make a decent novice chaser this season.

High class chaser who missed the second half of last season through injury. He has won 7 of his 11 races, including a grade 2 hurdle at Warwick, and the 2m 5f grade 1 Neptune novice hurdle at the Cheltenham festival in 2017. Sent chasing last season, he won a 2m4f novice chase at Huntingdon, beating Casablanca Mixv 1 ¾ l, and followed up at Newbury where he beat Yanworth 3l in a 2m 4f grade 2 chase. He picked up his injury when third at Cheltenham in January, beaten 8 ¼ l by Yanworth. Ben Pauling told the punter, He’s come back in looking brilliant. We’ve given him a little wind op, we just maybe heard a little bit of a whistle that day at Cheltenham when he was beaten and it was well-documented that he missed the Festival after suffering a foot abscess. That is now well behind us, it’s great to have him back and we plan on going up for the intermediate chase at Carlisle – the Colin Parker Chase – on November 4 and if that goes well then he’ll probably have an entry at Newbury (Ladbrokes Trophy).

Smart young hurdler, currently unbeaten after 4 starts.  He made his debut at Ludlow in November last year , winning a 2m bumper by ¾ l from Court Royale, and followed up at Leicester a month later, taking a 2 ½ m novice hurdle by 4 ½ l from Collanly. He then went to Acot in January and won a 2m 5f novice hurdle by a neck from Champ, and finished the season with victory at Huntingdon in a 2m 4f listed hurdle, beating Western Ryder 3 ¼ l. He did not appear again as he had sore shins, but is reportedly in good order and is a smart prospect either over hurdles or fences this season. He made a winning debut over fences at Carlisle recently.

A uselful mare who has always looked a chaser, she goes over fences this season and could progress higher up the rankings, particularly in the mares events. Her first win came in April 2017 at Navan in a 2m mares maiden hurdle, where she beat Reine Des Pres 1/2l, and her other victory was at Carlisle last December in a 2m 4f mares handicap hurdle, when she beat Paper Roses a head. She finished last season with 2 good 2nd paces, at Carlisle in March this year, in a 2m 1f mares handicap hurdle, beaten 5l by Pixiepot, (received 9lb), then when beaten just a neck (receiving 10lb), by Naranja in a 3m mares handicap hurdle. She should give Neil and his partners more fun this season.

Tony has a share in this lightly raced horse who made his debut in a maiden point to point at Monksgrange in March 2017, finishing 3rd, beaten 12l behind Madison To Monroe, then in October filled the same position in a similar race at Lough Rea, again beaten 12l, this time behind Rath An Luir.He then won at Loughbrickland, beating Rathill 12l, in November 2017, and subsequently moved to Willie Mullins. He made his rules debut at Gowran Park in  March this year , winning a 2m 2f bumper by 9l from Presenting Well, then was a disappointing 6th at Fairyhouse in a similar race in April over 2m, beaten 97 l behind Getaway John, and finished the season with a 7th at Punchestown in another 2m bumper, beaten 33 ½ l behind Dunvegan. He will go over hurdles, and a step up in trip should help him

2018/19 Jumps - Editor's Introduction

A season of if, but’s and maybe’s lies ahead. If Thistlecrack and Sizing John come back fit, Maybe if the ground is better, Might Bite wins the Gold Cup, Faugheen may go chasing, but probably 3m hurdling, and you can go on.

What is certain is that it looks another exciting season ahead, and Henderson and Mullins still look the dominant forces, with Nicholls and Elliott able chasers . Some of the younger trainers have decent prospects among their ranks for some decent races. Footpad and Presenting Percy, Samcro are the leading younger generation aiming to step up and upset the established Champions.

We have 94 different horses this time, and for the first time in some while we have a horse in every string, Altior, which tends to be the mark of a true champion. On the other hand if 2 seasons ago some one had predicted Thistlecrack would be ignored and Faugheen and Sizing John would be single picks you would have got some strange looks over breakfast
