Defoe has always been highly rated by Roger Varian, but it was only last season he eventually scored at the highest level. He has generally run well at the highest levels, but one has always felt that trainer Roger Varian expected a bit more. He made a winning start to his career taking a 1m Ffos Las maiden by Bianca Minola in September 2016, His 3 year old season showed he was a very useful performer as he won his reappearance at Newbury taking a 1m 2f handicap at Newbury in May by 1 ¼ l from Fearless Love (received 3lb), then followed up at York in July, taking another 1 m2f handicap by ½ l from Society Red ( received 21 lb), then stepped up to listed company, won the 1m 3f Glasgow stakes at Hamilton by 1 ½ l from Frankus. He progressed to Group class next in September at Newbury winning the 1m 5f Group 3 Geoffrey Freerer stakes by ¾ l from Wall of Fire (gave 9lb), and finished the season with a disappointing run in the St Leger at Doncaster, finishing 10th beaten 28 ¾ l behind Capri. He started the following season with victory at Newbury in April, taking the group 3 1m 4f John Porter Stakes by 2 ½ l from Danehill Kodiac, then in May took the 1m 4f group 2 Jockey Club Stakes by 3 ¾ l from Red Vernon. He then ran a respectable third to Lancaster Bomber at the Curragh at the end of May, beaten 3 ½ l in the 1m 2f group 1 Tattesalls Gold Cup, and then went to Germany and finished 2nd in the Group 1 , 1m 4f Grosser Preis Van Baden beaten a neck by Best Solution. He was then a rather disappointing 11th in the Arc, beaten 11 ½ l behind Enable (received 3 lb), and finished the season with 2nd in the 1m 4f group Bayerische Hausbau - Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich in November, beaten Iquitos. Last season he started with a 4th in the John Porter stakes at Newbury, beaten 4l behind Marmelo, then was 2nd again at Newmarket in the Group 2 Jockey Club cup, beaten 1 ¼ l by Communique, then got his first Group 1 , winning the 1m 4f  Coronation Cup at Epsom , beating Kew Gardens ½  l.  He followed up at Ascot in June taking the 1m 4f group 2 Hardwicke stakes by ½ l from Nagano Gold, then disappointed in King George at Ascot in July finishing 9th beaten 34 ¾ l behind Enable ( received 3lb). Put away for the rest of the season, he plan was to start at Meydan this season, but with that already lost, we wait to see where he can start this season.
