2026 Flat Profile - Alther Walden

4 y bg Study of Man – Alternanthera  (Bob)

Interesting pick , he was unraced at 2, and made his debut at Windsor in July last year, finishing 2nd in a 1m novice stakes, then 2 weeks later at Nottingham was 5th beaten 3 ¾ l by Vincent Rocks (gave 2lb), in a 1m restricted novice stakes. He got off the mark at Catterick in August, wining a 1m 4f restricted novice stakes by an eye catching 14l from In The Post (gave 3lb), and followed up at Newcastle in March this year winning a 1m 4f handicap by 2 ¾ l from Rastnet (gave 3lb).

He is obviously well thought of as he holds a Chester Cup entry and looks a progressive sort who should win a handicap or 2 this season. He made history at Catterick, becoming the first Hungarian bred to win in the UK since racing post records began. Alther Walden, a son of Study Of Man, was bred by Hungary's Babolna National Stud and has a poignant story. He was part of a project driven by stud manager Zsolt Hegedus, who had planned to offer four Hungarian-bred yearlings at Baden-Baden in a bid to promote his country's bloodstock industry but died before it came to fruition.

He had been bought in utero through Oliver St Lawrence for 18,000gns at Tattersalls as his dam Alternanthera is from Lanwades Stud's famous family of Alpinista. Billy Jackson-Stops secured Alther Walden for €34,000 in Germany, when offered through Gestut Luenzen and he was scoring on his third start in the colours of Blue Starr Racing. He reappeared at Mussleburgh and was pulled up in a 2m hamdicap

2 y ch g Soldiers Call – Dubai Paradise (Martin)

A rare 2 year old pick and a first entry in the handbook for the Rebecca Menzies stable, he made his debut at Mussleburgh at the beginning of April, winning a 5f restricted maiden by 7l from Katies Knight (received 3lb), and followed up over course and distance 8 days later winning a novice stakes by a neck from Rlasthope (received 5lb). He has a listed race entry, and is difficult to assess but looks capable of winning again

2026 Flat Profile - Addison Grey

4 y gr g Havana Grey – Moon Song (Neil)

The leader of the grey brigade he made his debut at Southwell in November 2024 winning a 6f restricted maiden by 3l from Midnight City, then at Doncaster in April last year was 7th beaten 5 ¼ l by Sixtygeesbaby (gave 2lb), and next at Salisbury in July won a 6f novice stakes by an eye catching 17 l beating Scent Of May (received 10 lb). In August at Chepstow in a 6f handicap he was 3rd beaten ¾ l by Roberto Caro (received 1 lb), then at Newmarket in August won Neil’s favourite race the 6f Grey Horse handicap by ¾ l from Binhareer (gave 6lb).

At Doncaster in September in a 5 ½ f handicap he was 10th beaten 4 ½ l by Eternal Sunrise (received 14 lb), then was gelded during the winter and returned in April at Newbury finishing 2nd in a 6f handicap beaten a head by Mirabeau (received 1 lb). He should win a couple more sprint handicaps this season

2026 Flat Profile - Abashiri

3 y bf Frankel – Sobetsu (Martin)

One of the dark horses, she is beautifully bred and made her debut at Kempton in November last year winning a 1m fillies maiden by 4l from Venetia. She holds entries in both English and Irish guineas, and is currently 16/1 for the English version. A more realistic target on pedigree is the Oaks for which she is a 10/1 chance and she looks set for a good season at op level.

2026 Flat - What's in a name?

James J Braddock
James Walter Braddock (June 7, 1905 – November 29, 1974) was an American boxer who was the world heavyweight champion from 1935 to 1937.
Fighting under the name James J. Braddock (ostensibly to follow the pattern set by two prior world boxing champions, James J. Corbett and James J. Jeffries), Braddock was known for his spoiling, counterpunching style, powerful right hand, and iron chin.

He lost several bouts because of chronic hand injuries and was forced to work on the docks and collect social assistance to feed his family during the Great Depression. He made a comeback, and in 1935 he fought Max Baer for the world heavyweight championship and won. For this unlikely feat he was given the nickname "Cinderella Man" by Damon Runyon. Braddock was managed by Joe Gould.

Montezuma
Montezuma II (born 1466—died c. June 30, 1520, Tenochtitlán, within modern Mexico City) was the ninth Aztec emperor of Mexico, famous for his dramatic confrontation with the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés.

In 1502 Montezuma succeeded his uncle Ahuitzotl as the leader of an empire that had reached its greatest extent, stretching to what is now Honduras and Nicaragua, but that was weakened by the resentment of the subject tribes to the increasing demands for tribute and victims for the religious sacrifices. Montezuma was commander of the army and organized extensive expeditions of conquest in deference to Huitzilopochtli, the god of war and of the sun. Through astrologers, the god instilled in the emperor a kind of fatalism in the face of an uncertain future.

Schrödinger's Cat
Schrödinger's cat is a famous 1935 quantum mechanics thought experiment by Erwin Schrödinger, illustrating the absurdity of applying quantum superposition to everyday objects. A cat in a sealed box is linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not kill it, theoretically placing the cat in a simultaneous "alive and dead" state until observed.
