One who falls in to the could be any thing category, he has just one run, winning a 1m 2f maiden at Newmarket last October by 1l from Making Miracles. He looks to stay well enough and has a Drby entry, so is obviously well regarded. He should certainly pick up some points this season.

Has looked an extremely smart miler this season, and very much on an upward curve. Unraced at 2, he made his debut at Newbury last May in a 7f maiden, finishing 4th, beaten 3 l by Almoreb, then a month later won a 1m maiden at Haydock by ½ l from Mutarabby. He followed up at Ascot in a 1m handicap in July, beating Juanito Chico a neck, then in August was 3rd at Goodwood, in a 1m 2f handicap, beaten 2 ¾ l by Good Omen. He finished the season, winning the 1m 1f Cambridgeshire handicap at Newmarket by ½ l from Afaak.
He reappeared at Doncaster in March, winning the 1m Lincoln handicap by an impressive 2 ¾ l from Lord Glitters, then followed up in a 1m group 2 at Sandown beating Stormy Antarctic 2 ¾ l, again visually impressive. He should win plenty more races, but so far nearly all his wins have had the word soft in the going, and as a Pivotal, would not want a hot dry summer.

2018 Flat - Editor's Peview

Well what a season we have in store, at present flat racing seems to get stronger as the big owners keep horses in training longer and re matches occur more often . The stayers division is a case in point, a few seasons ago, talk was of reducing the distance of the Cups to get more runners, now we have a classic contest between Order of St George and Big Orange resuming last years fantastic rivalry, with the young pretender in Stradavarius, and French stalwart Vazirabad, sure to give us more tremendous entertainment. Then we have Enable and Cracksman heading the 4 year olds. Godolphin are starting to challenge the Coolmore domination since spreading their horses round more trainers, and are well represented here this season,  and with horses such as Harry Angel and Battash, also staying in training , we have an exciting summer ahead in the sprint division as well.
On the Godolphin front, there is a lot of unhappiness in that operation over Charlie Appleby’s out shining Bin Suroor, and that is reflected here as Appleby has a number of picks, and I am not aware of one from the Suroor  yard, though I have not been through them all.
Trends are always interesting and Willie Haggas has been knocking on the door of top trainers for a while and Martin has picked up a couple from his yard, and we have a 114  different horses overall, and an incredible 92 of those are single picks,  so good luck to all
Regards
The Editor

2017/18 Boozypunter Horse of the Season

Congratulations to...

Footpad

who notched four wins and earned 286.6 points in the process - over 100 more than its nearest rival.

A single pick for Tony, Footpad didn't look an obvious choice after following round the likes of Petit Mouchoir, Buveur D'Air and Unowhatimeanharry over hurdles the previous season.

Willie Mullins' charge was ready for the bigger obstacles though and Footpad, under Daryl Jacob, clocked up a facile win at odds on at Navan just before our competition started.

The first scoring effort was at Leopardstown on Boxing Day. Odds on again and with Paul Townend in the saddle this time. 78 points were landed with the Editor noting "led before 3 out, went on approaching straight, stayed on well from before last, winning impressively by 13l".

Footpad was back out at Leopardstown at the start of February for the Irish Arkle and landed a comfortable odds on win against old rival Petit Mouchoir among others despite "a slight mistake at the last". That was another 70+ points haul for Tony.

It was on to Cheltenham next, Ruby Walsh with the ride this time in the Arkle. The Editor had yet to be completely convinced of Footpad's claims, tipping up Petit Mouchoir. Perhaps if that horse hadn't set off at breakneck pace with Saint Calvados then Footpad might have found it more difficult. In the end Walsh picked off those tiring horses and took command from the last bend cruising to a 14-length win over Brain Power and earning another big points haul for Tony.

There was one more outing for Footpad - at Punchestown this time in the Ryanair Novice Chase. Daryl Jacob steered the 2/5 shot to a 12-length win and a perfect season.

The top three...

286.6 - Footpad (78 + 77.6 + 78.4 + 52.4)
169.8 - Buveur D'Air (51.1 + 51.1 + 16.1 + 51.5)
140.6 - Next Destination (34 + 52.8 + 53.8)
