Star stayer Stradivarius will run "at least once more" after his neck second to Kyprios in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup on Tuesday. The John and Thady Gosden-trained eight-year-old finished to good effect under Andrea Atzeni but could not quite extend his record tally to five in the day one feature at Glorious Goodwood.

Retirement had been mooted for Stradivarius before the race depending on his performance, but his owner-breeder Bjorn Nielsen took great heart from the run and pinpointed the Lonsdale Cup at York – a race he has won three times – as a likely next target.

Lord Glitters has been retired, probably having felt deflated after being the main stay of the Church string, he was dropped this season. Trainer David O’Meara had mulled over the possibility of sending him back to Sakir racecourse to defend the Bahrain International Trophy which he won last November, yet the nine-year-old had shown signs that the old spark was no longer there. Carrying the colours of the late Geoff Turnbull and his wife Sandra, the highlight of his career came when he won the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2019, downing Beat The Bank by a neck.

He also won the Group One Jebel Hatta in Dubai last year, successive renewals of the Singspiel Stakes at Meydan, the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot and the Group Three Strensall Stakes at York.
A son of Whipper, the gelding’s last success came in the Group Two Singspiel at Meydan in February, one of four runs this year. However, connections have called time on his globetrotting career after he finished last of five to Bay Bridge in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in May.

Richard Fahey spoke to the Punter ahead of the July Cup
"It’s great to have the favourite for the Darley July Cup in Perfect Power and we’re going to find out if he is the best sprinter around on Saturday. I’m delighted with his draw in eight, you can get stuck on a wing in that race, Billy-no-mates on your own, so it is nice to have a few around us. There's loads of pace in there for him to aim at which should suit too. I can’t remember a July Cup where there wasn’t plenty who didn’t want to go forward and it should all pan out nicely for him in that regard."

Inspiral heads a select field of five for Friday’s Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. Sandrine is also entered.
