9 y gr g Poliglote – Scarlet Row (Neil)
I have to say the first thing that surprised me when I looked him up is that he is only 9, as he seems to have been around a long time. So having won the Champion Chase last season, he has every chance of defending his crown this time around.
He has been a top class horse over the years, winning 11 and finishing second 7 times in his 26 starts. He had 2 runs in France as a 4 year old, finishing 2nd on his debut in a 2m 1f hurdle, then won at Auteuil in June 2015, winning a 2m 2f 4 year old conditions hurdle by 1 ½ l from Brut Imperial. He moved to Paul Nicholls, and his first season as a novice hurdle saw him fall on his debut at Cheltenham , and his only win from 3 further starts was at Exeter in February 2016, taking a 2m 1f listed novice hurdle by an eye watering 59 l from Trans Express.
Novice chasing saw him come to prominence, winning on his chasing debut at Haydock in November , a 2m 5f novice chase, beating Vintage Clouds 10 l , then followed up at Ascot in another 2m 5f grade 2 novice chase in December, beating Rock The Kasbah 4l. He won once more from 4 more outings, that victory coming at Kempton in February 2017, beating Pain Au Chocolat ( gave 4lb) 11l.
The following season saw him win 4 out of his 6 starts, The Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter, his first Grade 1 chase, the 2m Tingle Creek at Sandown, beating Fox Norton ½ l, the grade 2 , 2m Desert Orchid chase at Kempton and the 2m 4f grade 1 Melling Chase at Aintree, beating Min a neck. The following season saw his only win come on his first start, a 2m 5f grade 2 chase at Ascot beating Charbel ½ l. He was 4th in the King George at Kempton, 4th in the 2m 5f grade1 chase at Ascot, 2nd in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, beaten 1 ¾ ll by Altior, and 2nd in the 2m 4f grade 1 Melling chase, 20 l behind Min. He only ran 3 times last season, and he saved the best to last with his only being in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, beating stable mate Dynamite Dollars 9l.
