He made his debut at Dawston in May 2022, winning a 3m 4 year geldings maiden point by 2l from Sea Invasion, then in December a Punchestown, won a 2m bumper by ½ l from Captain Cody. In April last year he was third in another 2m bumper, beaten 7 ¾ l behind Ballyburn (gave 7 lb). In November las year he won a 2m maiden hurdle by 5 ½ l from King Of Kingsfield, then in December at Navan won a 2m 4f grade 2 novice hurdle by ½ l from Lecky Watson.
In February this year he was 2nd in the 2m grade 1 Derby Sale novice hurdle at Leopardstown, beaten 7l by Ballyburn, then in March at Cheltenham won the 2m grade 1 Supreme novice hurdle by 1 ½ l from Mystical Power. He finished the season at Punchestown in April, finishing 3rd in the 2m grade 1 Champion novice hurdle, beaten 6l behind Mystical Power.
Henry De Bromhead told The Punter, Slade Steel is going novice chasing and will start off in a maiden chase in the next few weeks. We’re obviously very excited about him, given how much he did over hurdles last season, and we’ve always had fences in mind for him. He is versatile enough that we were able to keep our options open with him regards trip last season, and we’ll play it by ear with him as we go. He’s very exciting.
