News
Ger Keane is looking forward to testing his stable star Crystal Black at the highest level in the final Classic of the season, the Irish St Leger, at the Curragh on Irish Champions Weekend.

Jim Goldie has been forced to admit defeat and rule King Charles III Stakes winner American Affair out for the rest of the season. The high-class sprinter has been out of action since a bone scan showed an issue after he had given Goldie the first Group 1 success of his career in June. Hopes that he could return for the Breeders' Cup or British Champions Sprint Stakes have now been dashed.

"He's not going to run until next year, I would think," said Goldie. "We were hoping to get him back but we did an MRI and we weren't 100 per cent happy with it. So we want to watch it for longer before we do too much with him."

George Scott has left the door open for a possible tilt at the Champion Stakes for Bay City Roller after an agonising near-miss in Sunday's Prix Niel.  The three-year-old was sent off at 16-1 for Longchamp's Group 2 contest but outran his odds impressively under Callum Shepherd, getting his head out in front only to be reeled in Cualificar by a short neck. It was the third runner-up effort this year for the son of New Bay but the best is still yet to come according to Scott, who is hoping to see further improvement once conditions soften this autumn.

News
Roger Teal is determined to keep knocking on the Group 1 door with stable star Dancing Gemini, who is heading back to France next weekend for Sunday's Qatar Prix du Moulin.

Donnacha O’Brien’s star filly Porta Fortuna will miss her planned return in the Matron Stakes and may not be seen on the track again following a decision to sell her.

Ryan Moore is set to miss the rest of the season with a broken leg, which will rule him out of the Irish Champions Festival and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as well as many other major autumn races.
Aidan O'Brien broke the shock news at the Curragh on Saturday, when Moore was stood down from his five intended rides, with the trainer revealing a scan on Friday had shown the Ballydoyle number-one jockey had fractured his right femur.

News
The home defence for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe has moved sharply into focus following the news that Aventure and Sosie, who finished second and fourth respectively last season, will have their key warm-ups at the revamped Arc trials day a week on Sunday.

However, John Gosden stated on Tuesday that Europe's middle-distance championship is off the agenda for Prince of Wales's Stakes and Juddmonte International winner Ombudsman, who he told the Racing Post will "stick to a mile and a quarter".

Ed Walker has revealed that Almaqam is set for a fact-finding trip to France next month ahead of a possible crack at the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Walker said: "I'm delighted to say that Almaqam is in as good a form as I've had him all year and the plan is to run him in the Prix Foy on Arc trials day at Longchamp next month."

The son of Kingman was back at the head of the John and Thady Gosden team on Monday morning when he enjoyed one canter on Warren Hill under his regular rider Luke Catton. It his hoped Juddmonte's colt can return to his usual routine of two canters a day later in the week ahead of a possible return to action in the autumn when he holds an entry in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Sakes at Ascot on October 18, for which he is 5-1 favourite.

The City of York Stakes could be next for Shadow Of Light after he was a last-minute withdrawal from the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, with a return trip to Paris already being planned for October.
Charlie Appleby was reluctant to run the three-year-old on quick ground at Deauville on Sunday and is targeting a third Group 1 for Shadow Of Light, following victories in the Middle Park and Dewhurst as a juvenile. He has yet to score at the highest level this season but has run with credit, including when third in the 2,000 Guineas

The Ombudsman team are taking no chances with the pace angle in next week’s Juddmonte International at York and are shipping in a pacemaker from France to set the fractions for their leading candidate. The new arrival is to be supplemented for the Group 1 contest on Thursday at a cost of £85,000.

A quiet spell for the Richard Hannon yard has not dented the trainer's huge confidence in Rosallion ahead of Sunday's Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville, where the three-time Group 1 winner bids for a change of luck after two near misse

Some stats in case you wanted to mark the passing of these two institutions.

Some great Punter winners picked up points at Thurles:

Un De Sceaux, Don Cossack, Footpad, Allaho, Presenting Percy, Fakir D’oudairies among others.

Our last Thurles winner was Hewick on 15 March this year

Trueshan’s great career was largely missed by the Punters with us finding only four of its wins for a total of less than 100 points. The last of those came in the 2023 Prix du Cadran.

News
Field Of Gold will undergo tests after being found to be lame following his defeat in the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday. Speaking to the Punter , joint-trainer Thady Gosden said: "He's lame on his left hind and we'll investigate to see if we can find what's causing it. It's something that wasn't there yesterday but has come to light today."

Calandagan will not attempt to add the Juddmonte International to his recent Group 1 triumphs in the King George and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.  Trainer Francis Graffard had suggested in the run-up to the King George that stablemate Daryz was more likely to head to York, but in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's defeat of Kalpana at Ascot, he admitted to being tempted to back. However, the Aga Khan Studs' racing manager in France, Nemone Routh, said Calandagan's main focus will be the Japan Cup on November 30, for which he is eligible for a bonus of up to $3million on top of the already generous prize pool, having won two qualifying Group 1s this summer.

Kalpana is raring to go for Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (4.10) after recent rain at Ascot eased conditions to good at the royal racecourse.  Connections had been nervous about the prospect of quick ground for Britain's richest all-aged contest, but after rain arrived at Ascot over the weekend, and with further showers forecast before the two-day King George meeting starts on Friday, Kalpana is primed for action.

"Kalpana is all systems go for the King George," said Barry Mahon, European racing manager to owners Juddmonte. "This has been her intended target since her last run in Ireland and she's in good shape."
Field Of Gold could face up to ten rivals when he takes on his elders for the first time in next week's Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes (3.05) on the second day of Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday. Field Of Gold could renew rivalry with Henri Matisse, who was runner-up at Royal Ascot following his French 2,000 Guineas success. His trainer Aidan O'Brien has also left in The Lion In Winter, Rosallion, Lead Artist.

Ombudsman has taken over at the head of the market for the Coral-Eclipse after stablemate Field Of Gold was ruled out at the confirmation stage for Saturday's Group 1 contest (3.35).

The John and Thady Gosden-trained four-year-old was an impressive winner of the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot and will likely start as favourite for this weekend's feature race, which could see Classic winners Ruling Court and Camille Pissarro take on their elders for the first time.

An entry list of 41 was whittled down to just 11 runners at Monday's confirmation stage, with Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Field Of Gold ruled out in favour of a tilt at the Sussex Stakes on July 30.

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe favourite Sosie remains in contention for trainer Andre Fabre while Camille Pissarro could be joined by Ballydoyle stablemates Expanded and Delacroix, who was sent off favourite for the Derby but finished ninth under Ryan Moore. White Birch and Hotazhell complete the possible Irish contingent.

Almaqam will bid to confirm the form with Ombudsman for trainer Ed Walker, having beaten the market leader in the Brigadier Gerard in May, and Owen Burrows stood his ground with Prince of Wales's second Anmaat

Coolmore have announced Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Lake Victoria will not run at Royal Ascot next week. Lake Victoria had been a warm favourite for the Coronation Stakes at the royal meeting at a general 5-6 on Monday morning, but the daughter of Frankel was a notable drifter out to 6-1 heading into Monday lunchtime. In a post on X, Coolmore said: "Lake Victoria will not run at Royal Ascot. She will have an easy few weeks and will return for a late summer/autumn campaign."

Donnacha O'Brien expects his star filly Porta Fortuna to return in the autumn after a small setback ruled her out of Royal Ascot.  The four-time Group 1 winner, who won the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer, made a winning reappearance in the Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh on Irish Guineas weekend and O'Brien pointed her in the direction of the Queen Anne afterwards.

However, the first race of the royal meeting will now come too soon and O'Brien will instead focus on finding a suitable target for her later in the campaign. The trainer said: "It's nothing too serious at all. It's just a little bit of a setback and we hope to have her back for the second half of the season.

Tom Marquand is counting down the days until Royal Ascot with Economics and retains full faith his star will be this year's leading light of the middle-distance division.

Four-time Derby winner Ryan Moore will partner Delacroix in the £1.5 million Classic at Epsom on Saturday, it was confirmed on Wednesday, but 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court is challenging for favouritism after receiving a low draw.

While Godolphin’s Classic hero Ruling Court was drawn in seven, his four closest rivals in the betting, Delacroix (14), Pride Of Arras (16), The Lion In Winter (19) and Damysus (15), are all in double-figure stalls after 19 were declared. It will be the biggest field since Kris Kin won in 2003.

News
Kyprios has been hailed "the most incredible horse with a concrete mind" by Aidan O'Brien following the retirement of one of the greatest stayers of all time on Tuesday.

A dual Gold Cup winner at Ascot, Kyprios won no fewer than 17 of his 21 starts and you have to rewind all the way back to October 2023 to find his last defeat. He won his nine subsequent outings and finishes his career on an official rating of 122, identical to the mighty Yeats who won four Gold Cups.

The decision was made to call time on Kyprios's career due to an aggravation of an old ringbone lesion, picked up while winning the Saval Beg Stakes at Leopardstown for a third time this month.

Reflecting on a glorious career which started in September 2020 with victory in a Galway maiden, O'Brien said: "Kyprios was just the most incredible horse. Obviously, we had to be ultra-respectful of him. Always. When he was a little bit sore after his run at Leopardstown, we were always not going to take any risks with him. Everybody felt the same way."
